Apple's latest patent teases a Pencil that can draw in mid-air.

Apple's next Pencil could eschew the iPad Pro entirely. The Cupertino company has filed a patent for a stylus that can be used on any flat surface, and maybe even in the air, as spotted by Dutch site TechTastic. The patent title being "Content Creation Using Electronic Input Device on Non-electronic Surfaces" gives us a few ideas of how Apple might pitch this. Which is great considering how light on details the rest of the patent, filed last July and made public in January, is.

An external sensor (along the line of a Leap Motion) could track the stylus, or its movements could be recorded with onboard accelerometers and positioning sensors. There's also the chance for feedback via an LED light or a small screen on the device. And really that's about all we have to go on.

What's interesting is that one of the patent drawings shows off a bevy of devices with touch screens, including a first-gen iPod and a laptop, alongside an iPhone, iPad and a Watch. Apple might not end up releasing this -- a patent isn't a commitment to production -- but it does seem more compelling as a stylus versus just serving as an on-screen pen as it currently does.

Retail Statistics.

The new retail buzzword is real-time retailing. It’s all about giving the customer what she wants, how she wants it and as close to when she wants it as possible. There is no more multichannel or omnichannel – it’s just the retailer and the customer. This makes the retail industry the one to gain the most from digital signage, especially considering how fragmented the customer journey is.

Who Know How To Use Shadows.

Creative Photos- 15 Creative Photographers Who Know How To Use Shadows
Shadows are a brilliant way to create striking photographs. They're free, they're everywhere, and there's no limit to what you can do with them. Take a look at these pictures compiled by Bored Panda to see what we mean. Each of them have been transformed by the use of a simple shadow. Some of the pictures feature models adorned with the silhouettes of leaves, plants and flowers, while others see bodies intersected by dark and sometimes seemingly body-hugging lines or pockmarked by light shining through hats and other garments. They're simple, they're clever, and they're beautiful, without a shadow of a doubt.

You can cut this display with scissors.

Want a display that can take any shape? You might not need a factory to cut it for you in the future -- you may only need a pair of scissors and a steady hand. Japan's National Institute for Materials Science has developed a flexible, organic/metal hybrid polymer display that you can cut without wrecking it. The technology only needs a few seconds of power to adjust to its new shape, and it even maintains its last information when you switch it off, a lot like e-paper.

The existing design only displays in one color and has a limited display area. It's easy to see the practical purposes even now, though. You could make your own clothes with integrated displays, or craft smart wearables that fit the exact shape of your wrist. The researchers also envision a world where you could change the colors of car interiors, sunglasses and windows thanks to displays that fit just about anything. Any such breakthrough is undoubtedly years away, but the very fact that it's a possibility is noteworthy.

Hewlett Packard Service Management Center Wows with “Enterprise” Multi-Sensory Experience.

“The Enterprise” is a multi-sensory experience permanently located in Plano, Texas at HPE’s Service Management Center. Users interact with a 10-person touch table while more than 350 square feet of dynamic animation, audio and lighting takes guests on a journey discovering HPE’s services.

Nominating Company: 900lbs of Creative, Dallas, Texas
Venue: Hewlett Packard Enterprise Service Management Center, Plano, Texas
Project: “The Enterprise” multi-sensory experience
Category: Immersive Environments

BACKGROUND The HPE Service Management Center team’s vision was to create an immersive “wow” experience for their prospective enterprise level clients that reinforced their messaging while providing a better understanding of how the HPE services could help them with their business challenges.

After a 10-month engagement, 900lbs of Creative, in collaboration with subcontractors, completed an immersive 20+ minute experience involving storytelling, 4K resolution animation, a 12-foot long interactive touch table, 5.1 surround sound audio, 18-foot-wide curved rear projection screens and a complete refresh of the previously existing space. Completing production in October of 2015, the results have been resoundingly positive thus far from both the various HPE internal departments and clients alike.

Interactive visual storytelling effectively bridged the gap between HPE’s messaging and their clients’ understanding of HPE’s value. 900lbs is proud to have been part of such a unique installation.

SwimTrain: Never swim alone.

Despite the health benefits, not many people would play soccer by themselves. So why swim by yourself? The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) will tell you that now you don’t have to with their new cooperative “exergame”, SwimTrain.

Their project is an app for your smartphone, which, with a waterproof case and a pair of underwater headphones, lets swimmers join virtual teams to cooperate and compete. It uses all the great tech packed into your mobile phone to evaluate your progress, coordinate with your team, and provide sensory feedback, keeping your “train” running, and keeping you entertained, all while getting fit.

Researchers Discover A Mysterious, Glowing Jellyfish.

Scientists on the NOAA research vessel Okeanos Explorer sent their robotic exploration vessel on a dive on April 24, 2016. It was the fourth dive in a series being conducted as the researchers explore the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean.

During that dive, the robot’s camera caught a glimpse of this gorgeous, glowing jellyfish moving gracefully through the water. The jellyfish was spotted at a depth of about 12,139 feet (3,700 meters).

The jellyfish is a hydromedusa, part of the genus Crossota. And it’s a species that the researchers think hasn’t yet seen before. Check out video of the jellyfish here:

Lytro Cinema.

Today, the company introduced Lytro Cinema, which is the company’s effort to woo those in the television and film industries with cool camera technology that makes their jobs easier.

The Lytro Cinema camera gathers a truly staggering amount of information on the world around it. The 755 RAW megapixel 40K resolution, 300 FPS camera takes in as much as 400 gigabytes per second of data.

Lytro is a company in the business of capturing light fields. What’s a light field? According to Wikipedia:

The light field is a vector function that describes the amount of light flowing in every direction through every point in space. The direction of each ray is given by the 5D plenoptic function, and the magnitude of each ray is given by the radiance.

What that means to me is a light field is light plus the direction the light is going. Capturing a light field means capturing depth information in addition to all the information a normal image sensor captures. Another way for me to understand capturing light fields is that with the Lytro Cinema 3D VR spaces are being captured.

Lytro is pivoting from consumer electronics to professional with the Lytro Cinema, which gives filmmakers flexibility not available before and allows for changing shutter speeds, the dynamic range, focus position, depth of field, etc. after footage has been captured. Amazing.
