China’s digital out-of-home media was surging toward 40 percent annual growth in the third quarter of 2012,

With its hundreds of thousands of screens, China is on pace to surpass U.S. as world’s largest DOOH market in 2013.

China’s digital out-of-home media (DOOH) industry was surging toward 40 percent annual growth in the third quarter of 2012, and the country’s blistering expansion pace may drive it past the U.S. as the world’s largest market in 2013, according to our research at PQ Media.
Driving Global Industry Growth Revenues generated by China’s DOOH network and billboard operators were pacing for 40 percent year-over-year growth in the third quarter of 2012, which would push the Chinese market past the $2 billion mark for the year, trailing only the U.S. and gaining fast. An accelerated 2012 performance would follow a 39 percent expansion in 2011, when China became only the second market besides the U.S. to exceed $1 billion in annual DOOH revenues, according to preliminary data released from the "PQ Media Global Digital Out-of-Home Media Forecast 2013-2017." In real dollars, the Chinese market expanded by more than $400 million in 2011, nearly doubling in size compared with 2009.

World's Largest DOOH Companies

China is home to some of the largest and fastest-growing DOOH companies in the world, including Focus Media, AirMedia and VisionChina, as well as divisions of Phoenix Satellite TV and Beijing Bashi Media. China’s DOOH industry has, by far, the most digital screens of any global market, with Focus Media operating more than 200,000 screens in the corporate & healthcare office vertical alone. VisionChina reportedly operates more than 100,000 digital screens throughout this market’s vast transit system.

Morphees -schermen met vormgeheugen.

Bron; www.nu.nl

DisplayLED Pixel Depot.

Bron; www.avinteractive.com

displayLED’s has given any potential customers a chance to see inside its new showroom in Surrey called The Pixel Depot, which has been designed as a collection of LED video displays from a range of manufacturers.

The showroom provides LED products across market needs, providing a resource for AV rental companies, systems integrators, TV studios & broadcast media, digital advertising, shopping malls, sports and events venues, architectural applications and building design, galleries, theatres and conference and exhibition markets, as well as unique and creative applications.

The Pixel Depot showroom is also available for rental companies and designers to demonstrate options to potential clients, and as an educational resource and training facility.

“The Pixel Depot is a real help to designers and specifiers because it allows direct comparisons between displays of different resolution and construction; and it also has the space to show many imaginative, not to say wacky, variations on the LED theme, from video floors to bendy screens,” said Robert Simpson, founder director, Electrosonic. “The Pixel Depot is a great facility where a wide range of different LED products can be seen and compared in a relaxed and informal environment” added Dave Crump, CT UK.

While head-mounted displays are nothing new, LG has patented a novel method for utilizing them that might grab your attention. The patent states that when you're staring at content on a device like a tablet, the HMD is inactive. But turn your head or the device away and that same content will automatically fade into view right in front of your bespectacled eyes. According to the filing, the noggin-strapped contraption is set to buzz as it switches displays and there'll be a slight transitional pause when viewing video. While we're betting virtual reality goggles and Google-branded headgear might prove to be a touch more popular, this is at least a lot cooler than passive 3D clip-ons.

E-reader - Kobo Aura HD.

Digital Billboards Spring to Action to Warn Bostonians.

Bostonians still shaken by Monday's Boston Marathon terror attack awoke this morning to gunshots, explosions and a plethora of emergency messages. With one of the terrorists, identified as Chechen Tamerlan Tsarnaev, killed in a gunfight with police officers early Friday morning, warnings went out that a massive manhunt was underway for the second terrorist, his younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was considered armed and extremely dangerous.

MEMA alert on Clear Channel billboards warns Bostonians.

The digital billboards in the area that had been called into action when the bombings occurred were instantly updated this morning with new messaging. According to Jason King, VP, corporate communications for New York-based Clear Channel Outdoor (CCO), Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) public safety alerts are being displayed on all seven CCO billboards in Greater Boston, located on I-93 in Medford and Stoneham, and Route 495 in Lawrence.

MEMA alert on Clear Channel billboards warns Bostonians.

"Clear Channel Outdoor first established this relationship by reaching out to MEMA to offer assistance during the early February blizzard, which dumped more than two feet of snow in Massachusetts and resulted in a state of emergency being declared," King told us in an email.
"The digital technology allows MEMA to adapt its messages in real-time to changing situations, providing a significant boost to its public safety effort and providing people, especially those with loved ones in the vicinity, with critical information."

MEMA alert on Clear Channel billboards warns Bostonians.

Besides making the digital signs available to MEMA at no cost, CCO "is partnering with MEMA to provide access as needed for the duration of this emergency situation," said King.
In addition, Clear Channel also has a relationship with the FBI. According to Ken Klein, vice president of OAAA, the Washington, D.C.-based association representing the out-of-home advertising industry, the industry's relationship with the FBI began in 2007 as an experiment in Philadelphia. After two out of a rotation of nine fugitives were apprehended from Clear Channel digital billboard notices, the FBI realized "they had an idea worth nationalizing," Klein said, adding,  "Since then, 51 fugitives have been apprehended from information generated by digital billboards."

Other partnerships with federal and state agencies, such as a memorandum of understanding with FEMA in 2012, have subsequently taken place and, according to Klein, formed the underpinnings for the spontaneous emergency messaging that we've seen this week in Boston.
"The flexibility and adaptive nature of the digital billboards in Boston for emergency messaging is an outgrowth of partnerships in other situations," said Klein.

Koninklijk dubbelportret in Rotterdam.

Interacting with a Flexible Screen.

We continue to see people push the boundaries of integrating the digital and physical world. Here’s another example, and very cool. The screen is a flexible silicone surface with projection that responds to touch and depth.

I wonder if they could make the silicone transparent in any way so that the projection comes from beneath, so it won’t interfere with the hands? Regardless, this is just cool to look at.

Barco Debuts 8 Millimeter LED

Barco LiveDots (a Barco company) has added a new C-series LED display, dubbed the C8. It has a pixel pitch of 8.33 millimeters and is spec'd at 5,000 nits brightness. It's an outdoor LED display that Barco says has been specifically designed for use in the rental and staging industry or for fixed installations.

Because the C8’s mechanical accessories -- such as the truss beams, feet and stacking frame -- as well as the image processors, are common to the other C-series LED displays, rental companies can use their current inventory and make it work in cross-rental applications. Like the rest of the C-Series from LiveDots, it's hermetically sealed and fan-less.

Here are all the specs:

Disney knows who’s touching what.

Regular touch interfaces don’t discriminate, treating all fleshy finger contact alike. They generally detect a single change in electrical current, or light / sound waves regardless of who is swiping or pinching. However, that could be about to change thanks to new work by a team at Disney Research, which involves identifying touch users through unique properties of the individual.

Everyone is different down to bone density, muscular mass, blood volume and water content. The device, which forms part of the ongoing Touché research project, sends a variety of harmless electrical currents through the body. This resists them depending on the various physiological properties of the individual. The Touché system measures the unique capacitive signature to identify individuals.
The top later is made of transparent Indium Tin Oxide. It acts as an electrode transmitting an electric current into the user’s fingertips.
The sensor board layer injects tiny currents into the ITO layer. When a user touches the screen, current flows from the sensor board, through the ITO and into the body of the user. The sensor then measures the impedance of the person to a variety of frequencies.
Disney’s latest prototype takes around a second to calibrate for a new user, but it can recognise an existing user in around 500 milliseconds.
The bottom layer is a standard LCD which provides the GUI.

Virtual Train Windows In Madrid Bar.

08-PAROLIO-THE-PASSENGER-CABIN-DETAIL-960

This is brilliant.
Jeff Wismer of Cineplex Digital tweeted about a coffee shop/bar in Madrid, Spain that has taken on the look of a passenger rail cabin, all the way down to a set of digital cabin windows that show a virtual landscape rolling by.
The Passenger bar was put together by art designer Parolio, and is located in the trendy Malasaña/Triball neighborhood.

The new space, says Parolio’s website, occupies a long and narrow architectural structure which inspired Parolio to create the concept of  “A train constantly on the move, right in the center of the city”.
The main area is designed to look and feel like a train cabin. To create the illusion of movement, three huge solid screens play the role of windows. They are constantly projected with synchronized and programmed videos that flow, from one screen to the next, just like in real life. The images have been recorded from train windows all over the world, presenting urban and nature landscapes that transport the clients into the fantastic experience of travel and leisure, pulling them away from the reality of the city around them.

03-PAROLIO-THE-PASSANGER-CABIN-GENERAL-2-960

The whole interior has been covered with great work on dark wood, brown leather with brass finishes. On the main hall photos of some of the greatest stars of classic rock, inside trains and train stations, welcome the clients.
