Touch devices extend functionality.

Interaction with small devices can be extended outside the screen with a prototype solution that uses cameras to support object recognition and gesture control. Researchers from Intel, Microsoft and the University of Washington have collaborated to develop Portico, a tablet computer that recognises touch on the screen and senses gestures and objects around the screen.

The development was covered in the MIT Technology Review which reports that two foldout cameras are employed above the display. These devices will detect and track motion around the screen. Height and location of objects can be determined with software that compares the two views captured by the cameras.

A video demonstrates a number of applications developed by the researchers. One shows a model plane that can be aimed to fire and destroy rocks that are propelled towards the toy. Another sees a researcher propelling a ball across the table to the table to try and score on-screen goals.

Potico increases the useable area of the screen sixfold according to a quote from Daniel Avrahmi, a senior researcher at Intel Labs, in the MIT Technology Review.

The researchers envision a system in the future that will use clip on cameras or a frame that includes both cameras and a pico projector.

Padzilla: 150 inch-beeldscherm voor de iPad.

Bron; www.ipadclub.nl

Pico Projector Market Triples in First Half

Pacific Media Associates (PMA) measures the worldwide market for pico projectors to be about 830,000 during the first half of 2011, more than tripling from 270,000 during the first half of 2010. The high-growth pico projector category includes all battery-powered or battery-powerable models, whether companion (stand-alone) models or optical engine models embedded in other devices.

As the market continues to grow rapidly, Pacific Media Associates is readying their 4th annual survey of the pico projector ecosystem. PMA will shortly be inviting manufacturers around the world who make components (e.g., imager chips or illumination systems), optical engine modules, and complete pico projectors to quantify (1) which features, functions, and prices pico projectors should have, (2) which applications are expected to be most popular (i.e., the use model), and (3) which groups of potential buyers to target as the future unfolds.
“Last year’s survey provided a wealth of actionable findings about the emerging pico projector market, that are available nowhere else”, says Dr. William Coggshall, President of Pacific Media Associates. “For example, in 2010 the survey respondents expected a dramatic improvement in average brightness of companion pico projectors, to nearly 35 lumens by 2012 and over 47 lumens by 2014. They also expected considerable improvements in resolution, with 80% of companion pico projectors having WVGA or better by 2014, including 32% offering 720p or 1080p.”

Contagious Signage.

Toshiba announces AT200 tablet, 10.1-inch display.

Looks like the Galaxy Tab 10.1 might finally have some real competition on its hands, with Toshiba announcing the AT200 tablet -- which we've been hearing rumors about for the past few days. It's a 10.1-inch Android tablet that measures in at just 7.7mm thick -- that's nearly a full mm thinner than the Samsung. The 10.1-inch LCD is 1,280 x 800 and is powered by a TI OMAP 4430 processor at 1.2GHz that can be paired by up to 64GB of memory -- augmented by microSD. There's a five megapixel webcam around back, a two megapixel shooter facing forward, and up to eight hours of battery life is promised. What hasn't been promised is a price or a release date, but we're told it'll ship sometime before the end of the year.

Videobril Sony met 3D via hd oled-schermpjes.

Bron; www.bright.nl

Touch Vision Interface employs AR to control screens from afar.

Bron; www.engadget.com
We're not exactly lacking in ways to interact with a screen from afar, but the folks at Teehan+Lax have now put an augmented reality-enhanced spin on things with their so-called Touch Vision Interface. While the "how" behind it is no doubt complicated (and being kept largely under wraps at the moment), the end result is fairly simple: you just point your smartphone at a screen (or two) and start manipulating it from the point of view provided by the phone's camera. Of course, it's all still in the early stages right now, but group sees a wide range of applications for the system -- even including large outdoor billboards.

Finland: Urbanflow Helsinki – Digital Media in a City Can be Intelligent.

As part of the Forum Virium Helsinki, Urbanscale and Nordkapp launched Urbanflow Helsinki this summer – an intelligent media proposition integrating Internet, mobile and especially digital signage, in the Finnish capital.

Presented as an “operating system for cities” it distinguishes itself from other digital signage installations that are exclusively advertising and concentrates on the Service element. The system is installed in a totem fitted with an inter-active touch-screen which offers:

- a way-finding function

- help to find services, restaurants, leisure activities, health centres etc.

- access to environmental and/or contextual information (traffic info, crime, air quality, noise levels, roadworks, etc.)

- possibility for citizens to comment on services

The video below gives a complete presentation of the project:

IFA 2011: Brilloos 3D kijken.

Bron; www.hd-technieuws.net

Samsung Series 7 Slate hands-on.

And you thought Samsung was finished showing off its Series 7 line of PCs. Joining the gaming rig and its smaller laptop brethren is a brand new Series 7 Slate running Windows 7. It sports a 400 nit, 1366 x 768 11.6-inch capacitive panel, Intel's 1.6GHz Core i5 2467M CPU with integrated graphics and 4GB of RAM. On the front there's a 2 megapixel camera and a light sensor, and around the back sits a 3 megapixel shooter. Connectivity comes courtesy of 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, plus there's a USB 2.0 port, micro HDMI, and a SIM slot for surfing waves of 3G (no word on which carrier will send those swells of data, though). Each slate also comes with an capacitive active digitizer pen, but will also have Swype on board plus a custom software layer to make Windows a bit more finger-friendly.
We got to spend some time with Samsung's newest slate, and we found it to be an intriguing device. We were impressed by both the display's brightness and its responsiveness to finger swipes and taps. The stylus also worked quite well, as the screen picked up its movements once the tip was half an inch from the surface. Plus, there was a little diamond indicator that popped up and tracked the pen's movements to aid the accuracy of our taps. We didn't get to delve too deeply into the custom software layer Samsung installed, but we can say that the larger icons and swipe-able screens made for an experience familiar to any iOS or Android user.

a 266 square metre digital screen in The Hague.

Bron; www.dailyDOOH.com
Early this evening (Thursday 1st September) at 18:30 CET sees the launch of a 266 square metre digital screen in The Hague. Netherlands.

As you can see from the early photo here, the screen is situated on one of the highest buildings in The Hague at 80 meters tall.

Ngage Media B.V is exclusively responsible for the concept development, content management and media sales of this mega screen.

Content we are told will be a combination of real time feeds from the municipality of Hague and other relevant organisations within The Hague as well as a mix of advertising (obviously) and interactive social media (though how well that will work so high up we are yet to see).

The LED is by Nichia, designed by VML technologies and Scala runs the whole system.

Sony's Tablet P, as rumored, and clarifying the full range of specs -- namely, that it weighs in at 0.82 pounds and runs a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 SoC with twin 5.5-inch (1024 x 800) displays, dual 5MP and VGA cameras, an HSPA+ radio, a 3,080mAh battery, a full-sized SD card slot, 4GB of internal memory, a micro-USB socket and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Those displays use the same TruBlack technology found in Sony's Bravia TVs, promising blacker blacks and whiter whites.
