Floating Video Wall.

Our assignment was to built a video wall, without the use of a wall to mount it.  It was very simple for the architect to draw 3 poles that the displays would mount to, but a much different situation to make it happen.
Since we were using Samsung LED video wall displays, the bezels were only 5mm.  This narrow bezel dictates that micro adjustable video wall mounts would be required.  We solved this dilemma by using parts from 2 of Chief Manufacturing’s video wall carts.  By modifying the square poles and the base, we were able to create long enough poles to be secured at the floor and above the suspended ceiling.
With the help of the Sierra Multi-Window processor, were were able to achieve beautiful high resolution images, with complete flexibility of content, window and sizes.
Located at the world renowned Center for Urology and Robotics Institute, this video wall is used for the waiting room during the day, and as a presentation and meeting environment in the evening.

Below is the video taken at the Grand Opening of the Winter Haven Robotics Institute and Urology Center.

ledtechnologie van Barco

Bron; www.sign.nl

Flexible Batteries.

Flexible devices cannot be 100% flexible until all components are flexible. The battery is one of component that occupying the most space from a device like a smartphone or a tablet after the screen. Generally a battery is rigid until the last invention from Imprint Energy which design a small and thin flexible battery using zinc instead the classical materials like lithium-ion. This type of battery is designed to stay in touch with the progress of new devices like smartphones or tablets. The capacity of battery is enough to power a working day long a mobile device.
Based on lithium the batteries cannot be flexible due to a large number of packaging that surrounding material to make it safer. To build a flexible battery the researchers create the anode from zinc, the cathode was build from metal oxide, while the electrolyte is a solid polymer allowing to travel the zinc ions between anode and cathode.

Also the researchers has some problems with zinc which used in batteries cannot be rechargeable due to the occurrence of dendrites which creates problems when the battery is charging. The problem was solved using aforementioned solid electrolyte and the result is a thinner and smaller battery.
The battery is manufactured using a screen-printing technique which working like a printer but the difference is that the printer arrange the components on a thin sheet that becomes the base of the battery. Using this technique the company can create different shapes for battery and aren’t limited by design compared with classical lithium-ion batteries.
The potential of this flexible batteries is high and for start the company can manufacturing only 100 battery units per day which is far away from mass production. No details about orders or price but I hope soon to have in my hands a 100% flexible smartphone which can be transformed in a tablet.

LG Display investeert 2,7 miljard euro in OLED-panelen.

LG Display, the leading provider of liquid crystal displays (LCDs), is now preparing an all-out effort to extend its dominance to the new world of digital displays shaped by organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).

The company is to spend 3.8 trillion won (about $3.6 billion) this year on adding facilities and improving technologies with the predominant focus on improving its capabilities for OLED screens, becoming conventional in smaller devices like smartphones and tablets and beginning to appear in larger products like televisions.

OLED screens provide a stunning upgrade in picture quality and power consumption compared to conventional LCDs.

High costs and difficulty in mass production have been slowing their adaption in televisions, but major electronics makers like Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Sony believe they will see a breakthrough on this front this year.

LG Display, narrowly above Samsung Electronics in the global market share, is eager to exploit the boost in demand. The company has no plans to add to its existing LCD lines in Gumi and Paju.

``Of our investment budget, OLEDs will take up the biggest slice of money, followed by research for flexible displays and oxide-based LCD technologies,’’

Curvy OLEDs - The Next Trend ??

Both Samsung and LG claim to have brought "the world's first curved OLED TV" to CES 2013.

The curved OLED TVs are both 55" displays that appear concave when viewed from the front and even more bent from the sides. Apparently the shape improves on viewing angles, even if an over-enthusiastic Samsung PR describes it as "IMAX-like" (never mind IMAX screens measure around 70 feet/21 meters).

Being OLED displays, both curved TVs benefit from deeper blacks and impressively crisp colors, with the LG's offering (EA9800) also boasting Cinema 3D support.

Neither Samsung nor LG give price points or even release dates for the curvy OLEDs, but expect more details should CES 2013 drum up enough industry interest in the technology.

Laptop - Tablet kiosk.

Drexel University sophomore Hyo Jung Cha needed to listen to audio clips for her Japanese class on Thursday afternoon but didn't feel like lugging her laptop to the school's Hagerty Library.
So she decided to use the library's newest addition - a laptop kiosk. Students swipe their identification card at the 24-hour kiosk and out pops a shiny silver MacBook, which they can use free for up to five hours.
Drexel reports it is the first school in the area to dispense computers via the kiosk, designed to give students access to laptops more easily and after the circulation desk is closed for the night.

Texas-based LaptopsAnytime provided the kiosk to the university, which is one of only two schools on the East Coast to house one of the machines.
The kiosks cost $12,000 to $30,000, depending on size.

Chinese cave temple comes ALIVE.

The BBC reports on how 3D recreation projection can be even better than the real thing. "When you show this to an academic they go into a swoon, because as a tool for actually looking at the painting, it's extraordinarily powerful," says Mr Jeffrey Shaw with the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong, responsible for the ALIVE project in Washington DC.

A striking and engaging 360-degree projection uses projectiondesign F10 AS3D stereoscopic projectors to incorporate virtual reality to transport viewers to the Buddhist caves of Dunhuang, China, known as the Mogao Grottoes or the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas. The immersive multimedia installation replicates a Chinese cave temple built over 1,300 years ago and was opened to visitors at the Smithsonian’s Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C during the first week of December 2012. The Mogau Grottoes are a Unesco World Heritage Site and represent the greatest collection of Buddhist art from the 4th to the 14th Century AD. The digital reconstructions give the viewer an alternative and very strong experience of the caves without damaging the fragile sites.

Activated by Hanger Shows Model Wearing the Clothes.

Here we see an example of digital signage activated by removing the hanger from the rack below the screen:

What I like about it is the interruption of the screen above the rack. The onset of motion forces the consumer to look up. What I don’t like is what you hear the Shinsuke Sato from Ceno explain:

“Customers’ first reaction is,’what is this?’ There are hangers and monitors, and many people don’t understand it. When our staff demonstrate, they are surprised…” The video then goes on to say that “…the response from customers has been positive, and customers are enjoying the experience of picking up the hangers.”

If digital signage is disruptive, it should be intuitive. If customers have to ask why it’s happening, or if salespeople need to explain it, the experience is diminished. This becomes more of a curiosity than a experiential value-add.
However, this is an interesting idea. I can see clothing retailers putting these on the self-standing racks in the middle of stores. Imagine these on the show floor. All the screens working together to create an experience that the consumer can control.

Android digital signage, media player.

Reality Interactive recently launched a new Android-based digital signage content management solution that it says offers basic functionality at a basic price point.
The new bitSHUTTLE player is an Android box that allows for remote monitoring and management of digital signage content, according to RI CEO Craig Martin.
"It's a very cost-effective way to deliver video and stills to retailers and brands at the point of purchase," he said in an interview at the fall Customer Engagement Technology World show in New York City in November.
Martin also talked about the trend he sees in media player solutions toward increasing complexity and increasing cost. Some companies, his own included, are reacting by trying to fill the niche left open for cheaper, less complex solutions that can be run by marketers rather than IT professionals.

Audi: An Urban Mobility Future Installation.

In a 190m2 three-dimensional LED surface stands the Audi Urban Future Concept with the upcoming A2. The dynamic surface demonstrates how the future of connected cars will automatically interact with the typical city infrastructure of tomorrow.

The installation features a real-time graphics engine and the tracking software, which receives live input from 11 Xbox Kinect cameras mounted high above the area, with the cameras capturing the movement of the visitors in real time and process them into patterns of dynamic movement displayed on the LED surface. What this does, is essentially demonstrate how the Audi concept will be able to interact and navigate challenges autonomously in the future.

Firewall – The Interactive, Stretchy Touch Screen.

Now touch screens can get all bendy stretchy!

Firewall is an interactive installation, a seemingly normal wall that is actually a stretched spandex surface which acts as a membrane interface sensitive to depth. People can push, touch, move and create fire-like visuals dynamically depending on the speed, pressure, depth and movement of the interaction with the spandex surface. On top of that, each membrane movement is synced with sound to complete the experience.

IBM says computers will be able to help us in with sensory capabilities. With something like this, it’s easy to see how the digital world is getting closer to the real world every day.
