H&M opent grootste Nederlandse flagshipstore in Amsterdam.

TrustedReviews: Philips Cinema 21:9 58PFL9955H/12 Review.

In short, watching all sorts of 2D stuff on the 58PFL9955H was quite possibly the most fun we’ve ever had reviewing a TV. Honestly. It’s just impossible to describe just how effective and impactful the 21:9 shape is, especially when it’s combined with the stunning picture quality Philips has got from its 2010 direct LED sets.

HD quality was terrific, too. Just make sure you tune the 21:9 as best as you can. The 58PFL9955H is like a Ferarri: you need to know how to use it to make the most of it. So HD, SD in 2D is great, how about 3D?

It also must be said that the 21:9 shape of the TV works great with 3D, with the extra width and impressive screen size making it easier to get lost in the 3D world you’re watching. Especially if you turn off the Ambilight feature, which oddly seemed rather distracting with 3D sources.

Crosstalk noise was found to be more problematic than 3D plasmas but much better than any other 3D LCD TV brand. TrustedReviews felt that it was “the best TV we’ve ever reviewed.” A few notable specs: 2560×1080, direct LED backlight, 500 cd/m2, HDMI 1.4 (4), Ethernet, USB, WiFi, SD, Component, Composite.

Is 21:9 the next wide? Most if not all film are wider than 16:9 and if you enjoy watching movies more than TV the more theater-like experience from Philips’ 21:9 TV sets might serve you better. Although a 58-inch TV might be too big to use as a monitor, a monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio would be terrific to put up two side-by-side webpages, documents, presentations, or really wide spreadsheets.

Super LCD, Explained.

Everything is super these days. Super AMOLED. Super IPS. Super PVA. And now Super LCD. So is Super LCD really super?

Super LCD is manufactured by Sony Mobile Display (SMD). SMD has focused on low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCDs, but with the partial acquisition of Seiko Epson’s Epson Imaging Devices (EID), SMD has incorporated amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFT LCD technology, which is easier and cheaper to manufacture. Super LCD sports SMD’s VSPEC III wide-viewing angle technology (branded as Vistarich) combined with a new LCD driver that leads to a contrast ratio of 800:1 and 160/160 viewing angles (>100:1 CR). Color gamut is a claimed 100% sRGB. Sony reports that optical characteristics are equivalent to organic EL displays, or OLEDs. Super LCD also features lower power consumption, low EMI, and Windows-On technology. That last bit eliminates the air gap between the panel and the glass cover resulting in less surface reflectance. Lower power consumption is the result of a higher aperture ratio and better light transmittance.

Here’s the text associated with the diagram above:

■Existing structure: A large reflection loss occurs due to the air gap between the window and the LCD module. (Surface reflectivity: 12%)
■Window-On structure: The air gap is eliminated by applying the window directly to the LCD module, greatly reducing reflection losses. (Surface reflectivity: 12% is reduced to 4%)

There has been a lot of debate as to which is the best display. Super LCD, IPS, Super AMOLED all have pros and cons but when it comes to color fidelity or accuracy on smartphones using these displays IPS and Super LCD come out ahead. Sunlight readability? LCD technology comes out ahead of OLED, even the super variety. The one area that OLED technology spanks any LCD, including IPS and Super LCD, is in black levels: OLED displays are as black as black can be.

Megagroot OLED-scherm in Duitsland.

Bron; www.sign.nl

Funky Forest.

"Funky Forest is a wild and crazy ecosystem where children manage the resources to influence the environment around them. By using their bodies or pillow "rocks" and "logs", water flowing from the digital stream on the floor can be dammed and diverted to the forest to make different parts grow. If a tree does not receive enough water it withers away but by pressing their bodies into the forest children create new trees based on their shape and character. As children explore and play they discover that the environment is inhabited by a variety of sonic life forms and creatures who appear and disappear depending on the health of the forest. As the seasons change the creatures also go through a metamorphosis."

Note: A version of Funky Forest, Moomah Edition, is permanently installed in New York City at the Moomah Children's Cafe. This version includes interactive environments related to the four seasons of the year, including an interactive particle system with falling leaves and snow.

Touchscreen made of ice.

Bron; www.engadget.com
Chances are this is one research project that won't find its way into a phone, but Nokia's research lab in Tampere, Finland has come up with a rather unique new type of touchscreen display: one made of ice. Of course, there are a few other components involved -- namely, a projector and an array of near-infrared cameras that are connected to a PC -- but it is technically a multitouch display made of ice, and that's got to count for something. For Nokia's part, it says that while the project is a "playful experiment," it does show that "interactive computing interfaces can now be built anywhere.

Check out Westfield's Digital Spectacular Network, the first shopping center, large format and high resolution LED video screen network in the United States.

Available in four top national DMAs—New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco—the Westfield Media Group's cutting-edge network sets the standard for out-of-home digital signage.

Each double-sided, rotating 10mm LED screen measures 18' h x 13' w for maximum visual impact in high traffic districts. A versatile content platform, the Digital Spectacular Network can accommodate advertising, live feeds, real time interaction, custom content and full motion video.
The screens play an 8-minute loop, comprised of 50% advertising with 15-second spots, 25% mall marketing, and 25% news feeds, sports, and weather. Advertisers may also purchase one-side domination.

In March of this year, Daktronics helped Westfield Group in Australia launch a similar Digital Spectacular Network in six of its prime shopping centers.

Eerste e-book met E Ink kleurenscherm.

Bron; www. fan.tv

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10-inch.

TV Gesture User Interface Demo.

Below is a demo of gesture interaction using Canesta3D technology to control and select information and content on a large display. In my opinion, this will change the way we interact with our TV's, at least for those of us who hate using bad remotes! Microsoft's acquisition of Canesta is good news, especially if they allow this technology to be used by the masses. I'm pretty sure it has the capability of supporting interaction with HD TV's are internet-ready, and can support GoogleTV, LeanBack, and Vimeo's Couch Mode.

About Canesta (From the Canesta website)
"Canesta (www.canesta.com) is the inventor of revolutionary, low cost electronic perception technology and leading provider of single chip CMOS 3-D sensors that fundamentally change the relationship between devices and their users. This capability makes possible true 3-D perception as input to everyday devices, rather than the widely understood 3-D representational technologies as output. Canesta’s 3-D input technology, based upon tiny, CMOS 3-D imaging chips or “sensors”, enables fine-grained, 3-dimensional depth-perception in a wide range of applications. Products based on this capability can then react on sight to the actions or motions of individuals and objects in their field of view, gaining levels of functionality and ease of use that were simply not possible in an era when such devices were blind. Canesta’s focus is on mass market consumer electronics, but many applications exist in other markets as well. Canesta is located in Sunnyvale, CA. The company has filedin excess of fifty patents, 44 of which have been granted so far."

The following video is from the Canesta3D YouTube channel. It demonstrates the 3D input sensor in action, with four people moving around in a living room. The chip used in the system depicted in the video was the precursor to the current chip, called the "Cobra 320x200".

Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Bron; www.nu.nl

Phosphor World Time E Ink watch.

Bron; www. engadget.com

They may not be the highest-function watches you've ever seen, but Phosphor's line of timepieces can make a claim that virtually no other watches in the world can: they've got E Ink displays. Sure, Seiko's been teasing us all with gorgeous pieces of E Ink wrist candy for half a decade, but the critical thing about Phosphor's offerings is that they're easy on the wallet (relatively speaking) and you won't need to embark on a grueling multi-year journey through specialty jewelry shops in Asia to try to find one.

The company just recently introduced its latest line of models featuring world time capability, and we've had a chance to check them out -- all four of them, to be precise. See this video for our quick review!

ITRI shows off 6-inch FlexUPD AMOLED, hybrid 2D/3D display.

Bron; www.engadget.com
Hey, remember when Taiwan's ITRI said that flexible TFT-EPD displays would be ready for smartphones by 2009? Yeah, well, keep that in mind when reading about this new 6-inch flexible display the company says will be released in a line of e-readers "very soon." It's called the FlexUPD, a 1mm thick AMOLED with a 5cm folding radius, 150nits brightness, and "unbreakable" construction. ITRI is also talking up its switchable 2D/3D display that we saw earlier, able to display both types of content simultaneously and do so without the requirement of goofy glasses. That tech is called i2/3DW and is set to "revitalize the [display] industry by revolutionizing the concept of 3D viewing." You keep on believing, ITRI, we'll just keep on waiting.
