Animated images at the wave of a hand.

From www.inavateonthenet.net

The ability to create bespoke animated characters with a wave of the hand may seem like magic, but Walkabout Projection is making it a reality. Clients including BBC and Adidas have so far used the wireless, fully portable projector to create animated images on any surface.

Video artist and projectionist Shaun O’Connor has created a HD video device which can create pop-up performances outdoors and indoors powered by ‘magic’ hand gesture control.

The wearable tech device allows users to customise their visual content – which can include characters, logos, and selfies – to suit their requirements.

A Unity3D gaming engine and Leapmotion sensor controller that feeds back to the mini CPU and battery attached to allow real-time body mapping in a mobile environment.

The system is a collaboration between O’Connor and Xbox Kinect programmers. The lightweight projector’s rig is invisible under clothing, visible in ambient light and is battery powered for ease of use.

The device is available for visual performance and promotional branding via the company PrickImage.

David Beckham for H&M

02.08.2012

The idea
H&M announced its underwear collaboration with David Beckham through a raunchy PR stunt on the White Cliffs of Dover, showing Becks modelling his new range of men’s briefs.

The canvas
We needed a famous landmark on a grand scale, so we used the White Cliffs of Dover, prompting a number of pun-tastic headlines from the nation’s red-tops.

The physics
We used three ultra-bright projectors to beam Becks’s image onto the cliff face, covering over 100 metres. We needed to time the photography carefully: too early and the projections wouldn’t pop against the Cliffs, too late and the spectacular scenery would be completely invisible. The perfect shot was taken just as the sun was setting.

The experience
The stunt generated nationwide coverage for H&M’s new range, including pieces from The Sun, The Metro, Vogue and The Mirror.

ING Belgium can give you a 270-deg projection experience.

Optoma Europe has supplied EX785 projectors for two ambiance projection room installations at the ING Bank in Belgium. ING Bank required the upgrade of two substantial meeting rooms to provide 270-degree ambience projection to help transform the interior experience. In total, 30 EX785 XGA projectors were installed in two rooms. Edge-blending technology produces an image that is over 20 metres wide blended across three sides of the rooms. This provided the ability to create a multifunctional fully-immersive projection experience. In autumn 2012 ING Bank in Belgium decided to upgrade two of their existing meeting rooms for 270 degree ambience projection. Critical to the design brief was the ability to realise the ambience vision within incredibly tight throw distance constraints and the design requirement that off axis projection was needed to avoid shadowing the image. The contractor and AV integrator AV Line, designed and installed two multifunctional AV rooms for ING and were further contracted to create two ambience projection systems. The museum installation company Wave provided additional blending expertise.

Android tablet with built-in projector.

Over the past few years I’ve seen a number of folks use tablets to give small group business presentations. Just fire up a slideshow app, prop up your iPad on a table, and everyone can crowd around to look at a tiny PowerPoint presentation. SmartDevices has another solution. The company’s new SmartQ U7 tablet features a built-in 40 lumen projector for presentations, movies, or other content. That way you can project a 50 inch, 854 x 480 pixel image on a wall or screen about 6 feet away. The tablet has a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, and a TI OMAP4 dual core processor. There will be two models, and AndroidYo reports prices will start at $315: •1 GHz OMAP 4430 CPU and 8GB of storage for $315 •1.5 GHz OMAP 4460 CPU and 16GB of storage for $400 While those prices might seem a little high for Chinese tablets, they’re not bad at all when you consider the built-in Pico Projector. A battery powered projector alone could cost $200 or more — and that’s without the attached Android tablet. The 7-inch SmartQ U7 is admittedly not the exact device that would sell me on a projector tablet. Despite having a 1024×600 resolution display, the 40 lumen projector only spits out an 854×480 picture which can be blown up to 50 inches. And though a 1 GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4 Chipset and a Gig of RAM seem a bit pedestrian for a £300-or-less Android tablet—it’s clear that such a device could be improved at a rapid rate and offered at a somewhat affordable price. Obviously, the compromise that would have to be made here would be the slimness of the tablet. But imagine being able to play games on a big screen anywhere you have a blank wall. Or instead of having a TV in your bedroom, you could just project your tablet screen onto a wall and use a wireless speaker. Or yes, maybe you would be using your tablet in the office and want to project a power point presentation or something. (I dunno!) Not only is projector technology better now, but I’d be much more willing to sacrifice some size in a tablet than I would a smartphone. If the quality of the picture was good enough, an integrated projector is definitely something I’d want in a future tablet.

Animated Video logo.

A Video Logo created by Vision2Watch for Bij Oma.nl. The logo itself is cut out as a physical object. The logo gets fixed to the wall, we then map out the contours and create an animation that fits perfectly on the logo. This creates a dynamic logo that can change with seasons or special offers.

The Digital Mannequin.

The Digital Mannequin, exclusive product concept of Looknglas Window Video Systems, will put the retail industry on its ear. The Digital Mannequin is a projected window front display that allows the retailer to put a live looking model right on the window, modeling clothes, accessories, etc.
The Youtube videos illustrate it pretty well. What they don't illustrate is how easy the product is for the retailer. There is no training involved, and installation is done in one day. The retailer only need supply the video or still photography. Well, actually, they don't because Looknglas can provide video and production services as well. So the retailer really doesn't have to do anything.
Looknglas has created the Digital Mannequin out of the Window Video System product. Digital Mannequin lets clothing retailers finally put their goods on the front window in a way that absolutely stops shoppers in their tracks, and allows the store to display more product with pricing or promo messaging that will literally drag the shoppers into the store. Sheer genius!

Beamvertising: Virtual Homeless

Aida’s Ancient Egypt recreated at the Moscow International House of Music.

One of the world’s favourite opera masterpieces – Aida - is among the most popular works by Giuseppe Verdi. In October Aida was performed in a very original form on the stage of the Moscow International House of Music (MMDM). It was the first time the famous opera, which has been performed for 140 years, was accompanied by unique large-scale projections created by 360Project Company. Svetlanov Hall of MMDM was full of the spirit and icons of Ancient Egypt. The installation included two Christie Roadster S+20K, two Christie HD10K-M alongside slide projectors.

Around 2,000 VIPs - including A-list actors, models, musicians, sports stars and businesspeople from around the world - enjoyed the opening of Dubai's lavish Atlantis Palms resort Thursday night.

The opening of the £750m Atlantis Hotel in Dubai was celebrated by what's said to have been the world's biggest firework display. There was also a massive star-studded party.

Kylie Minogue reportedly got £2m for performing at the event and was one of around 2,000 guests. Rooms at the hotel aren't cheap though - they go from £550 to £23,000 per night.

The UK celebrity set was well represented at the bash, with Lily Allen putting on a suitably posh frock. Guests at the party also enjoyed lobster and champagne and were looked after by 1,000 waiters.

Have you been there ?

Architectural Projection at UQAM.

A little late, but a nice find by http://adnmontreal.wordpress.com, here's a video of a architectural projection on the Université de Quebec à Montreal promoting the 38th edition of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema, which ran between the 7th and 18th of October.
The installation was conceived by new media consultant and developer Playmind.
