Interactive desks boost learning.

Bron; www.inavateonthenet.net

Interactive tables hold the key to increasing understanding of maths for primary school pupils, according to researchers at the UK's Durham University. Findings from a three-year project called SynergyNet suggest that multitouch, multi-user desks increase fluency and flexibility in maths. The study, which involved more than 400 pupils mostly aged between eight and ten, also demonstrated benefits of interactive desks over paper. The findings, published in the journal Learning and Instruction, showed that 45% of students who used collaboration tool, NumberNet increased in the number of unique mathematical expressions they created after using NumberNet, compared to 16% of students in the traditional paper-based activity. Professor Liz Burd, lead researcher on the project from Durham’s School of Education, said: "Our aim was to encourage far higher levels of active student engagement, where knowledge is obtained by sharing, problem-solving and creating, rather than by passive listening. This classroom enables both active engagement and equal access. "We found our tables encouraged students to collaborate more effectively. We were delighted to observe groups of students enhancing others’ understanding of mathematical concepts. Such collaboration just did not happen when students used paper-based approaches." The Durham University team designed software and desks that recognise multiple touches on the desktop using vision systems that see infrared light. These desks are networked and linked to a main smartboard. The teacher can send tasks to different tables to individuals and groups can send one group’s answers on to the next group to work on and add to, or to the board for a class discussion. A live feed of the desks goes directly to the teacher who can intervene quickly to help an individual while allowing the group work to continue.

Multi-iPad table.

The iPad table, a project of the Universal Mind interactive agency in Grand Rapids, links 15 iPads together to create one synchronized display. The co-creator of the iPad table, Joe Johnston (who put it together with David Tucker), told us that the system was conceived and built from scratch including the industrial design of the table and the custom app driving the connected iPads. A private wireless LAN hands off object information from iPad to iPad, allowing the moving "hypercards" to bounce and sail across the full extent of the iPad matrix. Double-tapping one of the cards expands it into a full webpage or other content.

It's easy to see how this sort of system could be popular and useful in a conference, retail or exhibit context. In fact, it strongly resembles another tabletop approach to touch computing that's had its branding co-opted to launch a different product: Microsoft Surface, Mark I. Before the Surface name was attached to the tablet convertible with the snappy keyboard, Microsoft was marketing Surface as a cocktail table-sized touchable computer intended for public, tourism and exhibit functions; that concept lives on as Samsung's SUR40 with Microsoft PixelSense. If you're interested in experimenting with multiple iOS displays linked together, Aachen University's Mobile Multi Display app is in the App Store now; for single-device inexpensive digital displays on the iPad, check out DynaSign or Digital Signage X. The utility of the iPad as a kiosk device took a big leap forward with iOS 6's Guided Access, which permits non-jailbroken devices to lock in a specific app and restrict sensitive screen areas while disabling the home & sleep buttons (making our "best of 2011" iPad accessory, the BubCap, a bit less necessary). Professional multi-display solutions from companies like Videro (profiled by us here) and Sedna are capable of driving the iPad as well as the Mac, but haven't yet reached the point of multi-device iPad display configurations.

With a vision for the ultimate fusion of artistically designed high-end furniture with the most cutting edge multi-touch technology, a privately held firm based in Orange County, Mozayo is now at the forefront of introducing one of the most immersive, and intuitive luxury electric piece the world has ever seen, the multi-touch hardwood table. However, we have earlier seen some of the high-tech coffee tables, along with other examples like the Microsoft surface, the Wilkhakhn touchscreen conference tables, and the Stardust multimedia table with dual-touchscreen. But, the Mozayo multi-touch table, developed through rigorous and continued technological research and development and integration, is an ultimate functional table taking luxury home furnishing to an entirely new level.

The modern, technologically boastful and practically purposeful, the Premium Series M32 features a large 32” Liquid Crystal Display that boasts a resolution of 1377x768, delivering an incredible image quality for viewing all multimedia content. Equipped with premium Dell commercial grade system, the table is supported by Intel i5 Quad Core 2400 processor with 4GB RAM and disc space of 250GB. Samsung SUR40 digitale tafel.

Mogees: Multitouch On Any Surface With A Contact Microphone

Here’s an interesting little project that, while it’s unlikely to grow into a major product, nevertheless demonstrates the potential of alternative interfaces. Bruno Zamborlin’s Mogees (an abbreviation of “mosaicing gestural surface”) takes input from a contact microphone and analyzes it to determine the placement and direction of gestures on any surface through which vibrations can be detected.

It really has to be seen to be understood:

Naturally this demonstration doesn’t speak to the practicality of using it to, say, scroll down a webpage or control a cursor. But don’t you kind of get tired of resting your hand on your laptop, inching your fingers along a patch of plastic or glass to move the next paragraph into view, or some such action? I like the idea of taking gestures off of the device itself and moving them into its vicinity.

And objections to this particular system are ready enough: how would ambient vibrations and music affect it? What about typing? And so on.

But the point isn’t to take this device and apply it in your mind to something for which it wasn’t designed (the Mogees is a sound creation and control device). It’s to take the idea of taking what you have and doing something new with it. What if you could put your iPhone on the table and, if it rang, tap the table once to answer, tap twice for speakerphone, put your whole hand down to silence it, etc?

This particular item may be more suited to Theramin-style musical noodling, but it descends from a larger concept of disengaging the controls for a device from the device itself — of improvising the medium of interaction but retaining the content.

Samsung 'Optical Sensor in Pixel' LCDs rolling out, ready for Surface 2.0

With Samsung's Microsoft Surface product, the SUR40, already available for pre-order, the company says its 1080p 40-inch "Optical Sensor in Pixel" LCD panels have gone into mass production. Those optical sensors help to more accurately interpret multi-touch input without interrupting display signals, offering a more fluid, interactive experience. Tempered glass overlaying the display supports 176 pounds of load and up to 50 touch points at once, which should be more than enough for a Pacific Giant Octopus or any jerk that leans on your $8K table. While the SUR40 is certainly a showcase device for these panels, it isn't the only practical application -- Samsung says it's thin enough and light enough to wall-mount, and hopes to see it used by stock brokers, financial analysts and schools.

Imagine Feeling Texture On Your Touchscreen

Soon you’ll not only be able to control a tablet with your fingertips, but you’ll actually be able to feel various textures like fabric, sand and water on your touchscreen. Though it may seem like a far-fetched reality, more and more companies are designing prototypes that feature this “Feel Screen” technology.
Both Disney Research’s TeslaTouch and the Swiss scientists at EPFL are working to enhance tablet experiences with the use of electrovibration technology. This innovative software development adds the sensation of texture in relation to the displayed image by implementing sonorous vibrations. Unfortunately, an undesired sensation supplements this advancement—noise.

Unlike effects created by mechanical vibration, the latest electrovibration technology developed by Senseg guarantees a silent device, and the company expects to release their “Feel Screen” interface sometime within the next two years. Additionally, Microsoft promises to replicate textures with light-sensitive, plastic, cell-constructed screens, eliminating the noise derived from electrovibration technology.

Excited to know more? Check out these demonstration videos of “Feel Screen” prototypes below:

We can’t help but imagine what it would be like to take this advancement one step further. How about playing with this giant, multi-user touchscreen in combination with sensory textures?

Aan de keukentafel.

Long since gone are the days of sitting at the breakfast table, drinking a cup of coffee and sharing the Sunday paper... or are they? The New York Time's R&D Lab is developing a "kitchen table" based-on Microsoft Surface touchscreen technology, designed to take individuals that are normally face down in their iPads, back to the table for a more social way to consume and share content. The display gives multiple readers the opportunity to sit at the table and interact, with options to share across the surface by swiveling and enlarging images or articles. The Times envisions that it will also be a mode of discovery, where users could get more information on a certain product by placing it on the table to find prices and related NYT articles, which could also an interesting method for advertising

MT 55 Multi-touch table.

I'm happy to put in a plug for Ideum's latest product, the MT55 Platform Multi-Touch Table. It incorporates a range of features that I'm sure will meet the needs of museum visitors. In my opinion, this table would be a fantastic resource for all types of libraries, including those in K-12 settings.

The multitouch microscope.

"The multitouch microscope brings new dimensions into teaching and research. Researchers at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) and Multitouch Ltd have created a hand and finger gesture controlled microscope. The method is a combination between two technologies: web-based virtual microscopy and a giant size multitouch display."
"The result is an entirely new way of performing microscopy: by touching a table- or wall-sized screen the user can navigate and zoom within a microscope sample in the same way as in a conventional microscope. Using the touch control it is possible to move from the natural size of the sample to a 1000-fold magnification, at which cells and even subcellular details can be seen." -Multitouchfi Also see the Multitouch website.

Foosball tables -the beautiful game.

11 the beautiful game is the ultimate luxury football table for discerning lovers of the world’s favourite game
Foosball, it's the game of champions too afraid to step outside and get their boots muddy. If that's a sentiment you can relate to, you'll have no trouble understanding why a team of Dutch designers has put together this here foosball table deluxe, which they've called 11 The Beautiful Game. In development since way back in 2008, the 11 has just made its way into limited production with a pre-order available via GRO Design's website. We had a little looksie inside the company's portfolio of past works and, as it turns out, it's already responsible for designing the Nokia 6500 and 6500 Slide, meaning it should be well versed in the art of massaging metal into beauty. Each unit ordered takes 12 weeks of meticulous handcrafting to build, but if you haven't got that long to wait, the video's just after the break right now.
