MIT's new transparent screen may lead to cheap heads-up displays.

Transparent screens just aren't very practical these days -- bigger models are frequently expensive and bulky, while smaller heads-up displays tend to have very narrow viewing angles. However, MIT may have solved all those problems at once with its prototype nanoparticle display. The device creates color images on a glass surface simply by 'tuning' a silver nanoparticle coating until it lets only certain light wavelengths pass through. The technique is both cheap and compact, since it requires little more than the coating and some off-the-shelf projector technology. There's also no need for beam splitters or mirrors, so you can see the picture from just about any angle. While there's a lot of work left before there's a finished product, researchers note that their display would be as easy to implement as window tinting; don't be surprised if MIT's screen shows up on a car windshield or storefront near you.

Talking about pervasive displays

Talk of pervasive displays has yet to reach everyday
conversation. So what are they?

The pervasive display requires you to forget about the well
loved world of mobiles and desktops and step into a sci-fi
looking future where devices, surfaces and sensors seamlessly
co-operate and interact. The desktop is now just the tabletop
and the content being looked at on the tabletop can be pinged
onto Google Glass like products blurring the lines of human
computer interaction and minimising the fragmentation
between us and our digital identities.

Don’t get us wrong, this isn’t going to be in the public domain in
the next year. But it’s not only possible, it’s inevitable and there
are just two areas holding it back; global internet access and
public fears around security/invasion of privacy. The internet
barrier is already being broken down as Project Loon highlighted ,
but the issues of security and privacy that
could slow the process down in the short term.
We know that brands can get people interacting with new
technology for an obvious and easily retrievable reward and
we need to keep pushing the boundaries of possibility and help
shape the technology available to OOH in the future.

The Future Is Swiping.

Here’s a video that suggests how gesture technology will be a part of everyday life as the sensing technology gets more granular. It’s a wee bit cloying as a cute couple goes from lust at first sight to marriage proposal (sorry, spoiled it for you), but is effective in showing what could/can be done.

room experience with a personal touch.

Combining accommodation and media: the demands from hotel guests are diverse. To be special, hotel operators have to offer customers homelike comfort while at the same time inspiring them with innovative design elements. How to combine the two in the digital world without cluttering the walls with monitors is demonstrated by the ITH Room Xperience by Spanish design studio Serrano Brothers.

The design is based on a new room concept which places the guest’s bed in the room centre, combined with a new media concept where the walls become projection screens for ideas, tasks and emotions.

Microsoft's New Multi-touch, Ink & Pen Tech.

Earlier this year, Microsoft bought Jeff Han's company, founder of Perceptive Pixel. Jeff Hans now works for the Microsoft Office division of the company, where there is a push to bring new and improved large multi-touch displays to the corporate world. With this off-the-desktop move, developers are challenged to develop applications for Windows 8 that will be geared towards supporting collaboration in corporate settings. Jeff Han and Nathan Fish were at Microsoft's "Build" conference recently to give a presentation about the nuts and bolts of the new technology - how it works, and suggestions for design. Although the video presentation is over an hour long, it is worth setting aside some time to watch!

Develop solutions that flow with your customers business - starting with individuals and information workers on their phones, desks or virtual offices, moving into conference rooms, brainstorm areas, boardrooms and common areas. Learn how Microsoft’s new pen and touch capabilities software and hardware will enable you to develop products that will help businesses be more efficient. Have a sneak peak on what our large multi-touch displays (82” and 55”) can bring to your solutions.

Robot hostess FURo.

French company ODM Technologies has signed an exclusive deal with Korea’s Future Robot, for European distribution of their robot hostess FURo.

The concept integrates a variety of digital media – as well as the face which is animated by a screen, the robot has two digital touch-screens. The front screen provides access to a variety of services.

According to its designers, FURo is capable of autonomous movement and vocal recognition and synthetic speech (in up to 30 languages), which make it deal for welcoming, guiding and informing visitors. It also features a smart card reader and a printer, so that it can carry out transactions, such as sales, ticketing, etc.

FURo is currently deployed in shopping centres, hospitals, shops and museums in South Korea.

Touchable Displays Of The Future.

These Fraunhofer microprojectors are still quite a ways off from being implemented into real phones, but the technology is certainly interesting. Based on an insect’s compound eye, the projector is a wafer of tiny LEDs that can twist and turn depending on position. This means there is no “keystoning” and the beams striking the surface will always be “crisp and clear.”

“Our projector consists of hundreds of tiny microprojectors in an array, each of which generates a complete image,” said Marcel Sieler, a researcher. “This technology, known as ‘array projection,’ is modeled on nature – on the compound eye found in some insects – and with it for the first time we can create very thin and bright LED projection systems with tremendous imaging properties.”

In short, the screen geometry changes with the position of the projector. Using the phone’s position sensor the projector calculates the optimum angle for each micro-array.

By adding infrared beams to the mix, the researchers have been able to make the screens touch sensitive, allowing you to tap, swipe, and select items on any surface. Because the arrays are very small you could feasibly stuff these into a phone or even a smart surface that interacts directly with a mobile device.

The company will display the system this month but don’t expect it in your phones for a while. The future, as they say, is here. It’s just not evenly distributed.

Atmel unveils XSense sensor film.

A new technology that will revolutionize flexible screens will be launched soon by Atmel. XSense sensors it’s very thin film in which are integrated electrical circuits to respond to the touch. This new technology allows creation of flexible smartphones and tablets, maybe in the near future their design will look completely different by the actual products.

Atmel is the company that produces flexible film by printing electronic circuits on the film, but this technology came to life inside the Conductive Inkjet Technology company.

Unlike existing touch screens available on the market and using several layers to display images and respond to touch, the new technology is much simpler and incomparably flexible with current technologies. Almost no size limit to use such flexible film sand also there is no flexibility limit.

A Twinkle in the Eye.

You wake up in the morning, rub your sleepy eyes. As you’re getting ready to face the day you put in your contact lens, which will make the Internet and all your files, playlists, GPS, favorite apps, and addicting games literally available with the blink of an eye. Scientists are already at the animal testing phase of the technology that will make this possible. (Yes, but who would want to wear a contact lens if one didn’t have to, might be the counter argument. Around a hundred million people wear contact lenses; so this technology has a significant market of potential early adopters. It would only be a matter of time before it caught on.)

Making this technology functional, comfortable, and safe is the work of Babak Parviz, a bionanotechnology expert at the University of Washington, in Seattle. The idea came to him from morning after morning of putting in his contact lenses. So he’s made it his mission to assemble an energy-storage module, telecommunication and power reception antenna, biosensor module, solar cell module (for additional power), and other highly sophisticated bit parts onto a consumer ready 1.5 square centimeter, transparent contact lens

In this lens concept, an antenna at the periphery collects incoming RF energy from a separate portable transmitter. Power-conversion circuitry provides DC power to other parts of the system and sends instructions to the display control circuit. The display, at the center, might consist of LEDs, which would turn on and off, or LCD-like elements, whose transparency would be modulated by the control circuit. An energy-storage module, perhaps a large capacitor, is connected to a solar cell, which could provide a boost to the lens. A biosensor samples the surface of the cornea, performs an analysis, and provides data to the telecommunication module to transmit to an external computer.

Wünsch Dir Was bei Migros – Supermarkt testet Wunschbaum

Migros Wunschbaum (Foto: Migros)

Samsung onthult 55 inch Super OLED TV
