3D displays coming to Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz is ready to bring in-car information and entertainment systems to the next dimension.

After other products like Nintendo's 3DS and Sprint's HTC Evo 3D managed to capture the attention of an increasingly 3D-loving market, the same kind of glasses-free technology may make its first debut in vehicles courtesy of the luxury automaker.

It's easy to picture why a 3D display would be more advantageous for in-car purposes. For example, GPS maps could show real depth to demonstrate how far away upcoming turns or destinations are.

Additionally, more important information could be highlighted in the foreground while other, less pertinent content can be relegated to the background.

That's only the beginning for Mercedes-Benz, though. The company has all sorts of things in the works for updating its already top-of-the-line in-car displays and systems.

The “Happiness” is Real.

In May there was the Coca-Cola HQ 125th anniversary show. And Coke is making sure that everyone knows about it by running the largest video projection display ever. Here’s the YouTube post:…

I think that it’s the coolest public digital display Atlanta has ever seen!

■The project uses 44 projectors total. 12 on three sides and 8 on the side facing south.
■The show runs for the next 3 weeks on Thursday, Friday & Saturday from around 9pm-11pm. (projectors only work when the sun is away).
■The projection screen is see through enough to give *some* window view for employees. But my wife April made the great point that everyone must be instructed to turn their lights off when they leave! 2 were on. It was obvious.
■The projectors are 16,000 lumen Christie units with super loud fans in custom enclosures (no cooling). The power consumption must be crazy on these puppies!
■It took 1 month for the tech setup & simulation. Power architecture, media servers, scalars, mapping software, signal routing, etc.
■2 hour content loop including bottle animation, smiling faces, old ads and images from Facebook. All created by Obscura.

Draadloos praten.

New Heineken Campaign Mixes Outdoor LED Screen with Augmented Reality.

Heineken has extended its recent TV campaign in Taiwan with an interactive digital OOH operation.

It features a large outdoor LED screen installed on a building covered in a sheet in the beer brand’s colours, and instructions on the ground inviting passers-by to position themselves correctly to be able to interact. But interact with what? With the various characters from the TV spot. They move about on the giant screen via an augmented reality function. Some dance, some sing, others fight with the participants.

This operation, which was mounted at the beginning of the month by Posterscope is reminiscent of the recent Lynx campaign in the UK.

3D Mapping Experience.

3D mapping is a growing technology used in a variety of applications. It involves projecting an animation or image onto a 3D surface. Blue Pony, in collaboration with A&V Company and Sweetwater Sound, completed a project last month involving this exciting technology for Premier Healthcare’s annual conference. The project took 8 weeks to complete with many hours of brainstorming, recording, animating, and programming. All team members took part in a weekly conference call to discuss ideas and present the status of their progress.

Initial meetings involved discussing the message, style, and visual ideas with Premier in order to meet their objective for the video. Sweetwater Sound wrote original song lyrics and instrumentation, and produced the record. A&V Company was the production company in charge of stage set-up and equipment installation and selection. Blue Pony coordinated all efforts and designed the visuals. This included conceptual development, illustrated storyboards, 2D and 3D animation techniques and video assembly. The completed video was then projected and mapped onto 3 dimensional stage walls. Blue Pony thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and having a team member on-site to see the video come to life at the conference.

Apple Introduces Thunderbolt Display.

CUPERTINO, CA - Apple today unveiled the new Apple Thunderbolt Display, the world's first display with Thunderbolt I/O technology and the ultimate docking station for your Mac notebook. With just a single cable, users can connect a Thunderbolt-enabled Mac to the 27-inch Apple Thunderbolt Display and access its FaceTime camera, high quality audio, and Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt ports. Designed specifically for Mac notebooks, the new display features an elegant, thin, aluminum and glass enclosure, and includes a MagSafe connector that charges your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.

"The Apple Thunderbolt Display is the ultimate docking station for your Mac notebook," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "With just one cable, users can dock with their new display and connect to high performance peripherals, network connections and audio devices."

With a beautiful 16:9 edge-to-edge glass design, the Thunderbolt Display uses IPS technology to provide a brilliant image across an ultra wide 178 degree viewing angle. Any Thunderbolt-enabled Mac notebook can dock with the display to quickly and easily create a full-fledged desktop solution. The Thunderbolt Display includes a built-in FaceTime HD video camera for crisp video conferencing, a 2.1 speaker system for high quality audio, an integrated MagSafe charger to keep Mac notebooks charged, three USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port, one Gigabit Ethernet port and a Thunderbolt port for daisy chaining up to five additional Thunderbolt devices.

The Thunderbolt Display is the world's first display to include Thunderbolt I/O technology. Featuring two bi-directional channels with transfer speeds up to an amazing 10Gbps each, each Thunderbolt port delivers PCI Express directly to external peripherals such as high performance storage and RAID arrays, supports DisplayPort for high resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI and VGA displays. Thunderbolt-based Macs with discrete graphics can drive two external displays giving professional users over 7 million additional pixels of display real estate and the ability to daisy chain additional Thunderbolt devices, as well as video and audio capture devices.

The Thunderbolt Display includes an ambient light sensor which automatically adjusts the display brightness based on external lighting conditions and uses only as much energy as necessary to provide an optimum viewing experience. Made with mercury-free LED technology, arsenic-free glass and highly recyclable materials, the new display meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold status.* The new display contains no brominated flame retardants and all cables and components are PVC-free.

The new Thunderbolt Display will be available within the next 60 days through the Apple Store, Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $999 (US). The Apple Thunderbolt Display requires a Mac with a Thunderbolt I/O port.
