RIM introduces PlayBook -- the BlackBerry tablet.
Bron www.engadget.com
Today at Research In Motion's annual BlackBerry Developer Conference, CEO Mike Lazaridis announced the company's new tablet -- the PlayBook. The tablet will utilize an OS created by the recently acquired QNX (just as we'd heard previous to the announcement) called the BlackBerry Tablet OS which will offer full OpenGL and POSIX support alongside web standards such as HTML5 (which is all tied into RIM's new WebWorks SDK). Lazaridis was joined on stage by the company's founder, Dan Dodge, who said that "QNX is going to enable things that you have never seen before," and added that the PlayBook would be "an incredible gaming platform for publishers and the players." RIM also touted the PlayBook's ability to handle Flash content via Flash 10.1, as well as Adobe AIR apps. The new slate -- which Lazaridis described as "the first professional tablet" -- will sport a 7-inch, 1024 x 600, capacitive multitouch display, a Cortex A9-based, dual-core 1GHz CPU (the company calls it the "fastest tablet ever"), 1GB of RAM, and a 3 megapixel front-facing camera along with a 5 megapixel rear lens (and yes, there will be video conferencing). There was no mention of onboard storage capacity during the keynote, though the devices we just spied in our eyes-on post are labeled 16GB and 32GB on their back panels. The PlayBook will be capable of 1080p HD video, and comes equipped with an HDMI port as well as a microUSB jack, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1. The device clocks in at a svelte 5.1- by 7.6-inches, is only 0.4-inches thick, and weighs just 400g (or about 0.9 pounds). Live from the BlackBerry Developer Conference 2010

3D tv in Nederland.

Sony Shows Off Prototype Flexible Electronic Paper Display.
Every year in Japan, Sony holds a special Dealer Convention that shows off the latest products and a glimpse of what is coming. The event, held this year in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Sony had a never before seen prototype of flexible electronic paper display technology at the 2010 Dealer Convention. Usually, E-paper has used glass substrate in the past but this new technology uses plastic substrate. Glass substrate is heavier and more prone to damage than plastic substrate, which is much lighter and can also be bent. Electronic paper with plastic substrate is also very difficult to break even when you drop it, and can even be rolled up like real paper.Sony has not mentioned when it will bring this technology to Reader devices, but judging by these highly advanced concepts we imagine it can’t be any longer than a year or two. Can you imagine the compelling new product designs that will result from this technology?

HDR Video Demonstration.
This video highlights several clips we've made using our new High Dynamic Range (HDR) process. Video is captured on two Canon 5D mark II DSLRs, each capturing the exact same subject via a beam splitter. The cameras are configured so that they record different exposure values, e.g., one camera is overexposed, the other underexposed. After the footage has been recorded, we use a variety of HDR processing tools to combine the video from the two cameras, yielding the clips you see above.
HDR Video provides filmmakers with many exciting new opportunities. Not only can HDR video create interesting effects, it can also allow for even exposure where artificial lighting is unavailable or impractical. For example, when a subject is backlit, one camera could be set to properly expose the subject, the other the sky, resulting in video with perfect exposure throughout

400% efficiency boost for LCD displays.
Researchers from the University of Michigan say that a new type of colour filter could significantly increase the energy efficiency of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs). The best LCDs today only emit about eight per cent of the light produced by their back lights. This means that they drain batteries in portable electronics and ramp up electricity bills in businesses and homes.
Normally, LCDs use several layers of optical devices to colourise, polarise, and shutter light from a back light, and inefficiencies emerge at every step. Now researchers at the university have made an optical film that promises to boost the overall efficiency of LCDs by more than 400 per cent--so that 36 per cent of light makes it through. The film colours and polarises the light that passes through an LCD more efficiently than conventional components can.
The colour filter is a three-layer sandwich of an insulating material in between two layers of aluminium; the entire stack is less than 200 nanometres thick and is etched with periodic slits, like a grate. The distance between the slits and their width determines the colour they'll produce when illuminated by a white back light. This is because the grating patterns are on the same size scale as the wavelength of visible light.
The grating shown in the top image filters different colours of light depending on the width of its slits, and the distance between them. The bottom image shows the colours produced by the filter when it’s illuminated with white light.
The Michigan researchers are now focused on making the filters "production worthy," or compatible with the machinery used to mass-produce displays.

DivX komt met eigen IP-TV platform.
Bron; www.glasvezel.nu

An All iPad Classroom.
The University of Notre Dame is testing a new iPad-based class model. The course is part of an ambitious study undertaken by the University on the impact of “e-learning.” Students in a Project Management class will not only use the devices in place of traditional paper books, but they will be encouraged to use the i Pads for all their daily information activities as well.
“While the iPad is more than just an e-reader, allowing students to do a lot more with not just the ebook but with searching for articles and other information as well, the Notre Dame course professor, Corey Angst, wants to make clear that the iPad is part of a bigger kit of resources for students. No one device has come close to being a catch-all for students, but Apple is hoping to inch closer to the iPad being one tool that can’t be left out of any classroom. Whether or not the use of e-readers in classrooms makes a difference on the environmental footprint of scholastic is yet to be seen. While thousands of paper books can fit into one device, reducing the number of trees sacrificed to the printing industry, the embodied energy of electronics, let alone their e-waste at end of life, creates a massive footprint for the devices.”

User interface designers The Astonishing Tribe developed this video to showcase their thoughts on what the future of screens may look like. The highlights of the video include stretchable screens, intuitive content sharing, interactive surfaces, and hybrid digital mirrors.
Screen technology is now taking the next leap and the coming years imagination is the only thing stopping us. We will soon have dual screens, malleable screens, screens built into wifi connected mirrors, desks or backside of gadgets clothed with e-ink screens, tactile feedback, color screens with great contrast in sunlight, holographics/stereoscopic screens, color e-ink touch screens, or screens actually knowing where they are in relation to other screens thanks to ultrasonic emitters and microphones.
Much of what's included in the video is not that far off. In many cases, the technology exists today. It's all about moving from prototypes and experimentation to mass production. The barriers are both technological and economic. Conquering the technology-side of the equation will eliminate many of the cost restrictions. As we move closer to the year 2014, continued innovation will foster a more screen-centric future.
Multi-touch everywhere.
You can see some of these applications would be great in educational settings. Just look at the joy on the faces of the kids in the Multi-Touch Everywhere video!
