Mapping on a basketball court.

Chema Siscar has just carried out the first mapping on a basketball court in the region of Valencia. The mapping was prepared for the La Fonteta pavilion, for the warm-up prior to the third leg of the semi-finals of the Endesa league between Valencia Basket and Baskonia, using two Christie Boxer 2K30 projectors, operated by Pascual Rodrigo, technical director of Audiovisuales.tv, a local AV company from Valencia.

NBA All-Star Saturday Night - Demo.

The 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend is stepping up the entertainment factor this year with immersive motion graphics produced by Moment Factory for “State Farm All-Star Saturday Night” in collaboration with televised live event producers Done + Dusted and lighting designer Baz Halpin, Production Designer Tamlyn Wright of Silent House. Moment Factory’s primary objective was amping up the experience at the Barclays Center, as well as for viewers at home. Video animations, sound and animated LED lights in the crowd serve to add drama and celebration throughout the event. The graphics also communicate key stats before the challenges, using inspiration from the New York Subway maps and signage. As the evening progresses through four events, the audience is entertained by ripple light effects in the crowd, produced in partnership with Montreal-based wireless LED experts PixMob. The highlight of the night is undoubtedly the slam-dunk contest. As players enter the court for the Slam Dunk competition, the audience experiences realistic 3D destructions of the court, accompanied by grandiose music. The visuals present each player in dramatic fashion, ramping up the hype until their moment of glory.

Projection on Ice.

It’s that time of year where our minds turn to other things: like ice hockey. You might not give a puck but millions cherish the winter sport.
And if you are in pro AV, you’ll cherish the opportunities that come with ice hockey stadiums.
For an example, we’ve chosen the New Jersey Devils because Lord knows they are not playing well and they need the help.
Their Prudential Center arena unveiled a newly-installed 3D projection imaging system. Devils management says their NHL team is the first in the U.S. to permanently install the technology. And it cost them more than $1 million….
“Watching this for the first time is really hard to explain…you have to think of the first time you saw an IMAX movie, or went to Disney, or saw one of the 360-degree screens,” says Hugh Weber, the team’s President of Business Operations.
We could tell you more about the show, but it’s easier for you to watch the video (link below).
Devils management worked with Quince Imaging to install twelve 26,000-lumen projectors in the Prudential Center during the off-season.
NHL fans may have seen Quince’s work before. The company has done one-time special event displays at other sports arenas, including a pre-game show at a Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup playoff game (see the link below).
Devils management says it's hoping the technology at every home game will draw people to their Newark, NJ arena. The technology will eventually be used during period breaks and for special events, but the focus right now is on pre-game entertainment.
That sums up a crystal-clear sports philosophy for New Jersey: If you can’t beat ’em, best entertain them.

Nike creates LED motion-tracking basketball court.

Nike's House of Mamba basketball court

LEDs are being phased into use everywhere from living rooms to offices to car headlights to street-lighting. Whilst these uses are practical, for something a little more exciting we can look to Nike. Its House of Mamba basketball court uses an LED surface for graphics, video and player-tracking.
This is not the first time LEDs have been employed for use in sports courts. Both the LEDSSPORT Pulastic LED Court and the ASB GlassFloor use LEDs to provide court markings. Different sets of markings can be easily switched between, and it avoids the need for a multicolored clutter of lines being printed on the court surface. The House of Mamba court, however, is somewhat more advanced.
The court was created by AKQA, Rhizomatiks and WiSpark as part of theNike Rise basketball contest and reality show based in China. Shortlisted contestants were mentored by LeBron James and Kobe Bryant before a selected group contested in a final match and the chance to participate in the Nike World Basketball Festival this September.
The LED court is made from glass and LED flooring and has a special layer that enables it ...
The mentoring part of the show took place at the House of Mamba court in Shanghai. The court took about three months to create, from the conceptual design stage through to its fabrication and testing. It has a wooden base layer platform to provide a natural bounce, followed by a layer of over a thousand 2 x 2 ft (0.6 x 0.6 m) interlaced LED screens, a layer of thick glass on top of the screens and an adhesive basketball surface that provides bounce and grip covering the glass layer.
The court, named after Bryant's "Black Mamba" nickname, uses sensors for motion tracking, artificial intelligence and reactive LED technology to display a range of different graphics. The technology is primarily used for training purposes. LED visualizations are used to guide players through a variety of challenges and training drills. The entire playing surface can be used simulate different game scenarios or specific training exercises based on what is required at the time.

Training exercises that the court can run include a sequence of fundamental skills drills, a test of shooting prowess from different spots on the court, dribbling drills and a defense drill using a digital defender.

Court Projections.

The Halifax Mooseheads and the Cleveland Cavaliers are putting digital signage in play. The Mooseheads, a hockey team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in Canada, and the Cavaliers, a basketball team in the National Basketball Association in the U.S., both recently turned to projection mapping technology to put on an in-venue digital signage light show for fans. The Mooseheads worked with Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada-based Egg Studios to produce an on-ice mapping display prior to one of the team's games in the

QMJHL playoffs earlier this month.

The Cavs teamed up with Herndon, Va.-based Quince Imaging for the projection display event that used a combination of 3D-mapping techniques and video content produced by the Cavs own QTV team and Think Media, according to the Quince website. The display used 16 HD projectors, the latest revision of coolux Media's Pandoras Box, version 5.5, and the newly released version of Warper, to align the video content to the graphic design elements on the Cavs' basketball court.
And fans also could interact with the light shot by live tweeting to two 16-foot-by-28-foot projection screens hanging above the court, the company said.

We've seen far more complex projection displays on three-dimensional surfaces such as casino and hotel facades, the surface of the water in swimming pools and even the EPCOT Spaceship Earth sphere at Walt Disney World in Florida.
But these deployments mark much more mainstream usages of the tech — and a novel approach for sports teams as they continue to try to innovate and change with regards to the live, in-venue sporting event experience.
As ticket prices increase and cable and satellite TV packages become more diverse in their sports offerings, stadiums and arenas are being pushed into an escalating arms race for making the in-venue experience worth the cost to the fan in terms of the money, time and effort involved in buying tickets, food and drinks and traveling to and from games.
And the fans and sports media are picking up on it.
"Technology can do some amazing things," wrote Kyle Newport on BleacherReport.com, about the Mooseheads display. "Sports teams are looking for new ways to get fans pumped up before games. As technology improves, the pregame videos do as well."
Sports Illustrated's Dan Treadway wrote in SI.com's Extra Mustard, "Regardless of the quality of play on the ice, I think that just getting to watch this show would easily cover the price of admission."
And, finally, The Washington Post's Cindy Boren was blown away by the Cavaliers' display:
"The Cleveland Cavaliers retired the jersey of Zydrunas Ilgauskas recently with a ceremony that was blend of the traditional and the cool — the very cool, thanks to 3D video that was projected onto the Quicken Loans Arena court before the game and at halftime."
