What is Digital Art ?
Digital art is a term and a practice that has been prevalent in the museums and contemporary art sectors since the 1960s. As technological advances mean that digital innovations are now pervading many more areas of our lives, the arts industry is starting to take the work of artists working in the digital realm increasingly seriously. In the wake of the growing debate and critical examination of digital art, the British Council Arts commissioned this short film, produced by Dezeen, to ask: What is Digital Art? And why should we pay attention to it?
The film features interviews with 15 Folds founders Margot Bowman and Sean Frank, curator and writer Conrad Bodman, and artists Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead.

New York Shoppers transfom in Disney Characters.
See what happens when Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Ana, Elsa, Olaf, Cinderella, Buzz Lightyear and other Disney Characters magically surprise unsuspecting shoppers with their Disney Side.
Award winning creative agency Grand Visual recently worked with Disney, helping them to bring a little Disney Magic to a Mall in Long Island, which saw an ordinary shop front transform shoppers’ shadows into Disney Characters’ shadows as they passed by.
.. and it looks like the video of same has become a viral sensation, with over 50 million views across Disney’s Facebook pages in just three days!
In January 2015 Mickey Mouse and his pals visited Westfield Shopping Mall in Massapequa, New York to share a little Disney magic with unsuspecting shoppers. Using a uniquely adapted storefront, and a touch of pixie dust, Disney Parks transformed shoppers’ shadows into Disney Characters’ shadows as they passed by.
These ‘shadows’ even interacted with shoppers who stopped to engage with them, leading up to a magical surprise.
Dan Dawson, Creative Technology Director at Grand Visual told us “This was a truly magical undertaking for Grand Visual, from concept to social film delivery. From the initial concept, sketches, content development to the creative technology, event and filmed and edited output from the event, this project is testament to the amazing team involved, and our mutual respect and love for all things magic and magical… something synonymous with the Disney Parks brand”.

The Aerial Imaging (AI) Plate.
The Aerial Imaging (AI) Plate, developed by Asukanet, is a next-generation display device which can form an image which appears to be floating in midair from light that passes through it. By combining this device with sensors, it is also possible to interact with the projected images.
The viewing angle of the display is plus/minus 20 degrees from an axis at 45 degrees to the plate, so the image can only be seen by people within that area. So for example, if this display is utilized for bank ATMs, the image can only be seen by the current ATM user, preventing others from seeing what data is input. Another advantage is that because the device itself isn't touched, the display won't get covered in fingerprints.
"At first sight, our AI Plate just looks like a sheet of glass. But in fact, it's an optical device, designed to reflect light twice. An ordinary mirror just reflects things, but the AI Plate forms an image from light passing through the plate, at the same distance beyond the plate as the object is from the plate. Unfortunately, with a 2D camera, the floating object doesn't actually appear to be floating, so it looks as if it's just stuck to the glass."
"Of course, one way of using this plate is digital signage, to show advertisements in the air. But our next development theme will be finding applications if the plate is made interactive, by combining it with sensors. For example, if an image of sushi is floating in the air, and you order some, the plate could become a point of sale device and take your order. The biggest feature of the plate is that if you switch it off, you get a flat table with nothing on it. So you can then eat your food right there, for example."
Asukanet is also developing new technology, as an evolution of the AI Plate.
"Our new technology uses a focus-free pico-projector to create objects that move backwards and forwards. So, for example, it could be a prototype for a slot machine, where things like three sevens, which until now moved only sideways, can be moved up and down. We'd also like to see what we can achieve by changing the image distance ratio from the original 1:1 to 1:n, and using a closer light source. Currently the image quality is still quite low and it doesn't yet produce realistic images, so another new challenge for us is forming an image further from the plate."
"In fact, we've supplied prototypes to most automakers, housing makers, and slot machine makers. So, I think they've all been able to make mock-ups. We're at the stage of seeing what products can be made and sold if a variety of manufacturers use the AI Plate."

Motion Design.
Svenja Frahm – MOTION DESIGN – UNITED KINGDOM (London)
I am a multi-disciplinary Creative Director and Projection Designer based in London with over six years of experience in art direction, concept development, motion graphics design and moving image direction.
My work includes channel brandings, title sequences and advertising but my distinct expertise lies within the field of projection mapping. I have worked on mappings on three continents creating stunning concepts and visuals or providing a link between the visual and the technical side. Besides my work as a Designer I am also part-time teaching at university and have held several specialized lectures on projection mapping that have also been informed by my own research into projection mapping techniques and moving image in public spaces. I believe that a mapping should be more than just pretty pictures on a building and have a purpose – fusing the brand objectives with the unique surface in a visually engaging narrative that captivates the viewer.

AT&T, Dallas Cowboys
In partnership with AT&T and the Dallas Cowboys, Obscura has reimagined the stadium experience, empowering fans with a groundbreaking new platform that enables them to amplify their collective spirit to unprecedented levels.
When the Cowboys took their field for the 2014 season, fans noticed something different about AT&T Stadium: The AT&T LiveFX Board. This 130-foot, high-resolution LED display is 3,840 pixels wide, with 40 robotic louvers that rotate 360 degrees and are equipped with high-powered strobe lights.
At pivotal moments during game play, fans receive a call-to-action from the Cowboys show controller via the AT&T Stadium App, which when activated, transforms their phones into portable light shows.
This experience unlocks a new dimension of collective fan participation. Fans are no longer passive spectators but members of the extended team, receiving cues that mobilize them to unite.
The AT&T LiveFX Board helps make touchdown celebrations more exciting, entertains fans during breaks, builds suspense for pivotal plays, and more.
Obscura also designed and installed four doublesided, 84-inch interactive Immersive Columns on the stadium’s east concourse. Each column features large-scale, interactive multi-touch displays on either side. With a few swipes of the hand, fans can learn about their team and interact with media curated into four themes: Cowboys Players, Cowboys Cheerleaders, Stadium Architecture, and Stadium Art.
Thanks to AT&T’s network strength, the AT&T LiveFX Board is the first stadium LED display built to respond directly to the fans. The platform introduces an experience that truly mobilizes fans.

Samsung Display to invest $3.6 billion in new OLED production line.
A Samsung Display spokesman told Reuters on Wednesday the new production line would mainly make medium and small-sized OLED displays for consumer electronics devices like smartphones and tablets. The investment would be made from 2015 to 2017, he added, without giving further details.
Analysts said the new line will initially produce curved panels like those on the Galaxy Note Edge, and eventually help win external customers which are becoming crucial to parent Samsung Electronics' future earnings growth as sales of its erstwhile cashcow smartphone business decline.
Recent data shows that arch rival Apple Inc caught up to or surpassed Samsung as the world's top smartphone maker in the fourth quarter.
"In the long run I think it's possible for sales to expand to outside customers," said Oh Sang-woo, analyst at Leading Investment & Securities, adding that these clients may include competitors seeking to play catch-up by using curved screens.
Samsung Electronics invests heavily in its components businesses on an annual basis. Of 23.4 trillion won in capital expenditures last year, 14.3 trillion won was for the semiconductor business while another 4 trillion won went to displays.
In addition to the planned OLED investment, Samsung is expected to start building a 15.6 trillion won chip plant in South Korea sometime in the first half of the year. The company said in October that construction for this plant will be completed in the second half of 2017.
Such investment requirements could act as a constraint on Samsung's capital returns. A person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Tuesday that the company's total 2015 dividend payout will likely fall from 2014.
South Korea's Yonhap News Agency separately reported on Wednesday that LG Display Co Ltd plans to invest between 1 trillion won and 1.2 trillion won this year to add capacity in an existing large-panel OLED production line. LG Display declined to comment.

Visions of Vienna with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra
While audiences inside the Sydney Opera House enjoyed the concert Greatest Hits from Vienna, the second half of the performance was projected live onto the sails for audiences across the world to enjoy. Grammy award-winning audio engineer/producer Tony David Cray, Head of Recording and Broadcast at the Sydney Opera House, directed the broadcast. The performance was captured at various angles by 14 cameras in the Concert Hall and projected live on to the sails by video experts TDC - Technical Direction Company. A series of animated 3D images celebrating the rich artistic and musical heritage of Vienna, created by multiple award-winning designers Ample Projects, complemented the orchestra and the music in transforming the cultural icon’s western exterior into a moving artwork. Greatest Hits from Vienna was a concert in the spirit of the traditional Viennese New Year’s concert. It was conducted by Ola Rudner and featured soprano Elisabeth Flechl, a soloist with the Volksoper Vienna, as guest artist.

BlackTrax FIRST with 6D projection mapping.
HBM Programme for Smart Government Award Ceremony in Dubai.
Production Technology LLC (Protec), the largest live events production company in the Middle East, deployed CAST BlackTrax realtime motion tracking solution at the Hamdan bin Mohammed Programme for Smart Government awards – HbMPSG.
The two-hour long ceremony was a pioneering initiative in the Dubai for government services. Protec used a five by five metre rotating cube structure hanging above a 22-metre diameter circular stage, during the ceremony the cube pitched forward, rotated and lifted up and down.
The cube was tracked using BlackTrax realtime motion tracking and integrated with d3 Technologies 4x4pro media servers.
BlackTrax also tracked two large pieces of 13 x 14 metre jigsaw-shaped scenery located around the edge of the stage that were used as a projection canvas.
The audience was positioned 240-degrees around the stage, meaning the cube and jigsaw shapes needed to be tracked and projected the complete 360 degrees of the setup.
This was the first project to use 6D tracking on such a scale scale in the EMEA region. BlackTrax not only tracks XYZ positions, which is the regular 3D positional information, but will also track Yaw, Pitch and Roll for rotation in any direction. Objects can move, spin, rotate in 6DoF (6 Degrees of Freedom) and still be tracked.
BlackTrax streamed realtime positional information via high-speed protocol (RTTrPM) to the d3 media server. d3 constructed a rigid body cube (virtual version of the cube) in the media server design tool that behaved and moved like the real cube, in realtime by using the positional information received from BlackTrax.
The content for the awards ceremony was created using live camera feeds of award winners, audience members and custom created graphics and videos. Protec not only supplied BlackTrax and d3, they also supplied 32 x Christie HD20K J Series projectors to create the spectacular visuals along with the complete audio, lighting and rigging solution.
