Researchers show off 'flex' interface for touchscreens No, it's not an actual flexible touchscreen, but this so-called "flex" interface developed by some researchers at Osaka University is still pretty novel. Rather than simply moving content off the screen when you're browsing something like Google Maps, it treats what's on the screen as an elastic, flexible material and squishes the content as it gets closer to the edge of the screen, which still lets you see it while you focus on a different area. That, the researchers say, would be just as effective on phones and other devices in addition to large touchscreens, and it would obviously be fairly easy to implement. Panasonic case study.

Panasonic distributes Catchyoo for many years now. They recently published a case study about their use of Catchyoo in association with their own video-projection products. This case study focuses on a precise installation in Kyushu, the Southern island of Japan. It is an excellent explanation about the value of the product to the final user and installation details. Etalage van het Jaar.

Uitpakken is inpakken' was dit jaar het thema van de vierde Etalage van het Jaar verkiezing van Beekwilder. De winnende etalage is volgens de jury een waar kunstwerk dat kijkers weet in te pakken. Beekwilder kon rekenen op honderden inzendingen voor de Etalage van het Jaar award. Hieruit werden 24 nominaties geselecteerd, waaruit de vakjury - bestaande uit zakenvrouw Annemarie van Gaal, Willem Hans Beens (hoofd styling Eijerkamp Zutphen) en Dennis Wiegerinck (winnaar 2009) - de drie besten moesten filteren. Criteria waren stopkracht, vakmanschap, compositie en totaalbeeld. "Het was moeilijk om te kiezen uit zoveel mooie inzendingen met internationale allure. Maar kijkend naar eigenheid, gedrevenheid en passie vonden wij dit het meeste terug in Atelier Inge Koenen", aldus voorzitter Willem Hans Beens. Volgens de vakjury wist Atelier Inge Koenen met haar gedurfde etalage (foto), ‘een waar kunstwerk', kijkers in te pakken. De stopkracht zat in de combinatie van originaliteit, simplesse en creativiteit. Behalve de award ontving de winnaar ook een reis naar New York. Bekijk hier alle prijswinnaars.

3D TV .... nog even wachten.

De techniek wordt al volop gedemonstreerd. Maar volgens Samsung duurt het nog wel 10 jaar voor we zonder bril naar 3D televisie kunnen kijken.
Pas tegen die tijd is de kwaliteit acceptabel en kunnen er televisies met deze techniek in massaproductie worden gemaakt. Voorlopig blijft het dus nog 3D televisie kijken met een bril op je neus.

Bij de huidige 3D televisies die je zonder bril kunt gebruiken is het 3D effect vanuit slechts enkele oogpunten zichtbaar. Samsung vindt de 3D kwaliteit alleen acceptabel als deze vanuit minstens 32 positities te zien is. Het zal nog zeker vijf jaar duren voor deze 3D televisies dusdanig doorontwikkeld zijn dat vanuit vrijwel iedere positie van 3D beelden kunt genieten.

Maar daarmee ben je er nog niet. Ook al is de juiste techniek er, dan kost het in eerste instantie nog heel veel geld om deze te gebruiken. Samsung denkt daarbij niet alleen aan de productiekosten van de televisies maar ook aan de ondersteuning door de kabelmaatschappijen.

Al met al ben je volgens Samsung 10 jaar verder voor er betaalbare 3D televisies in de winkel staan die je zonder 3D-bril kunt gebruiken.

Draadloze monitor.

De draadloze muis en het het draadloze toetsenbord zijn al op menig bureau te vinden. Dankzij Samsung kan daar binnenkort een draadloze monitor bij.
De Samsung C27A750 SyncMaster is een enorme monitor (27 inch). Met zoveel monitor op je bureau is er geen plek meer voor een draadje, dus die wordt vervangen door een usb-dongle. Daarmee werkt deze monitor volgens hetzelfde draadloze principe als een draadloze muis of toetsenbord. Wel betreft het een ultrawideband usb-dongle want zo'n monitor heeft heel wat meer databitjes nodig dan een muis of een toetsenbord.


Door de draadloze verbinding en het grote formaat van het scherm is de Samsung C27A750 zeer geschikt voor het geven van presentaties.

Wil je toch draadjes in de draadloze monitor prikken dan kun je gebruik maken van twee usb 2.0-poorten, twee usb 3.0-poorten en een 3,5 milliemter hoofdtelefooningang.
De monitor kan een resolutie van 1920 bij 1080 pixels aan en is voorzien van led-backlit. Eind april 2011 moet hij op de markt komen tegen een adviesprijs van 599 euro.

3D fog projection display.

Fog projectors have been around for ages, but projecting a 2D image onto a wavy field of 3D smoke doesn't exactly result in the most immersive experience ever. This system from a team at Osaka University is different, relying on three pico projectors all focused on a single column of steam that, as far as we can tell, is dropped down through a slew of multicolored drinking straws. Each projector has a slightly different perspective of the violet hare in question and, as you move about, the fog acts like a parallax barrier, only showing one angle at a time. With a few more projectors and a whole lot more fog the could be even greater. The bunnies, they would be majestic.

Das US-Unternehmen Stratacache zeigt erstmals sein neuestes Produkt: ein durchsichtiges Display, das besonders in Gefrier- und Kühlabteilungen im Lebensmitteleinzelhandel zum Einsatz kommen soll.

Stratacache folgt damit einem Trend der Displayhersteller. Bereits auf der ISE im Februar zeigte unter anderem Samsung einen Prototypen eines durchsichtigen Displays
“PrimaSee ist das neueste Instore-Medium, das Kunden bei ihrer Kaufentscheidung unterstützen wird”, sagte CEO Chris Riegel. “Diese Technologie erlaubt wirkungsvolle Videos, Werbung und Wegeleitung. Gleichzeitig kann der Kunde die Produkte in den Regalen hinter der Werbebotschaft erkennen. Die Technologie wird den Handel im kommenden Jahr deutlich verändern.”

Erstmals gezeigt wurde das Stratacache-Display PrimaSee auf der Euroshop 2011 in Düsseldorf. Die Bildschirme sollen in den Verglasungen vor Kühl- und Gefrierschränken eingesetzt werden. So sei mit den Produkten korrespondierende Werbung möglich, heißt es bei Stratacache.

Ein Szenario: Während der Kunde an den Kühlschränken im Geschäft vorbeiläuft, folgt ihm eine Eiscremepackung auf den Displays. Sobald er den Gefrierschrank erreicht, in dem sich das Produkt befindet, hält das Bild an.

Mit den durchsichtigen Displays sollen auch Couponing-Aktionen, Interaktion mit sozialen Netzwerken oder durch QR-Codes möglich sein.

Junkyard Jumbotron' stretches an image over all your screens.

A website called Junkyard Jumbotron, created by MIT professors Rick Borovoy and Brian Knep, lets you quickly stretch an image over multiple displays and devices with some seriously cool server-side trickery.

To begin, you'll want to head to the website and create a Junkyard session. This will give you a unique URL. Then set about scattering all manner of devices that have a web browser -- smartphones, MP3 players, laptops, tablets, games consoles, TVs and monitors hooked up to web-sources, you name it -- into a shape.

Load the URL on each device, and the screen will blast off a QR-style image. It's a unique black and white signifier that the Jumbotron server will be able to read and identify to correctly position, align and scale your photo. When that's all set up, take a photo of the devices and upload (or email) it to the website.

"It analyses the photo to figure out where all the screens are in space, and how to slice up and distribute the image to display correctly," explains the MIT team. If you haven't fluffed it up, you'll notice all your screens have changed to a Junkyard Jumbotron logo, letting you know that it's calibrated correctly.

Then it's just a case of uploading or emailing JPG images to that same site, to have them snap to the screens a few seconds later. You can even zoom and pan the image.

Ira Socal starts out his thoughtful blog post by mentioning that he dictated it using a Jawbone bluetooth headset and Windows 7 Speech Recognition, which is a free component of the operating system. He's found that this is a great approach to use with students who struggle with the writing process. He points out that there are many barriers that students face when attempting to write, especially for those who have difficulty holding a pen or using a keyboard efficiently. He also points out that "keyboards injure more people each year than any other workplace tool."

Ein neues Display mit Multi ChipLED von Osram Opto Semiconductors soll “die Bildqualität auf ein neues Level heben”. Verwendet wird die Technologie bisher von FormoLight Technologies, einem der größten Displayhersteller. Das Display besteche durch brillante Farben und scharfe Kontraste.

Die im neuen FormoLight-Display verbauten Multi ChipLED von Osram Opto Semiconductors sind nach eigenen Angaben die zurzeit kleinsten RGB-LED am Markt.
Die MultiChipLED sind quadratisch und haben eine Breite von 1,6 Millimetern. Die Höhe beträgt o,9 Millimeter. Für den Betrachter seien deshalb praktisch unsichtbar.

“Informationen müssen anschaulich vermittelt werden. Nicht nur das Konzept der Visualisierung, sondern auch die technische Wiedergabe spielt dabei eine Rolle. Exzellente Bildqualität ist gefordert, die sich dank den Vorteilen der LED, wie der besonderen Abstrahlcharakteristik und der Lichtqualität, leichter umsetzen lässt”, erklärt Sven Weber von Osram Opto Semiconductors. “Das schwarze Gehäuse der LED reflektiert fast kein Umgebungslicht und sorgt so auch für eine ungestört makellose Bildqualität.”

Osram garantiert auch einen hohen Betrachtungswinkel. Dieser sei möglich, weil sich die LED sehr eng anordnen lassen und das das spezielle Vergussmaterial für eine gute Farbmischung sorgt. Das Display ist für den Einsatz im Innen- und Außenbereich geeignet.

iPad 2 op 25 maart in Nederland.

Apple heeft de komst van de iPad 2 nu officieel aangekondigd. Dat bleek dinsdag uit een presentatie van Apple in San Francisco. De iPad 2 is in de Verenigde Staten al vanaf 11 maart verkrijgbaar. In Nederland komt het apparaat op 25 maart in de winkels te liggen.

De iPad 2 zal de iPad gaan opvolgen. Van de populaire tabletcomputer werden tussen april en december 2010 zo'n 15 miljoen exemplaren verkocht. Er zitten inmiddels zo'n 65.000 iPad-apps in de App Store.

Opvallend is dat Steve Jobs, CEO van Apple, zelf op het podium verscheen. Enkele weken geleden ging hij met ziekteverlof en maakte niet bekend wat er precies aan de hand was.
De iPad 2 krijgt een nieuw design, is uitgerust met een A5-chip en een dual-core processor. Hierdoor zullen grafische elementen negen keer sneller werken en is het apparaat als geheel zo'n twee keer sneller dan de voorganger.
Zoals verwacht is de iPad 2 ook uitgerust met twee camera's. Een ander gerucht wat dinsdagavond bevestigd werd, is het feit dat de iPad 2 dunner is dan de iPad. Zo'n 33 procent dunner zelfs. De dikte gaat van 13,4 millimeter naar 8,8 millimeter.

Het apparaat is daardoor ook iets minder zwaar. Het gewicht zakt van 680 naar 600 gram. De batterijduur van de tabletcomputer is verlengd naar 10 uur en Apple laat weten dat de prijzen voor de iPad hetzelfde zijn als bij de eerste iPad.
