Tablet groei.

Bron; www.nu.nl / Gartner

Marco Tempest: A magical tale (with augmented reality).

Marco Tempest, the techno-illusionist who has followed up with a augmented reality, Kinect-powered TED talk on the history of storytelling and illusion. The six-minute video, dubbed “A magical tale,” is embedded below.

Tempest combines sleight of hand and digital computers to create a very satisfying performance — he weaves 3D augmented reality into the mix. On the hardware-side, Tempest simply uses an HD video camera and Microsoft’s Kinect, but the software — bit that actually produces the illusion — is really quite complex.

Tempest, working with two software development houses, Onformative and Checksum5, used VVVV to script the six-minute magic trick. VVVV is a hybrid programming environment that allows you to mash together video clips, real-time special effects, and the input from external devices. In “A magical tale,” every special effect is rendered in real time using a desktop PC — the particle effects, the face tracking (and re-mapping), and digital compositing (such as the big, 3D globe that Tempest steps inside); they’re all reactive to Tempest’s movements. The end result is impressive. Embedded below is a “making of” video that illustrates the technology behind the illusion.

Ultimately, Tempest says that “A magic tale” is more about engaging an audience than bona fide illusion. “Magic is a unique tool for pre-visualization,” he says. Instead of a magic trick with sleight of hand, the subject matter could instead be a video game, an interactive and interesting way to teach kids otherwise dull subjects, or even an augmented reality face-to-face Skype chat. It won’t be long until Kinect-like sensors are built into laptops and smartphones, don’t forget.

OLED Flexible displays ready for use.

OLED technology promises more in the near future and will certainly make an important contribution in the development of new devices which will incorporate such screens. Use of OLED technology to produce flexible displays will have in time a positive effect on flexible devices. After Samsung announced in 2012 a flexible smartphone called Skin, a true race of technological giants a real technological race of giants began to bring such devices on market. Nokia is another giant who trying to use as much OLED technology among smartphones.

OLED technology has characteristics with more than existing technologies. Among the important characteristics of technology include efficiency, light source, thickness, or viewing angles.
The OLED lighting efficiency was measured and present characteristics of 50 lumens / watt, equivalent to the level of ordinary household fluorescent lamp.

The thickness of OLED screen is very small because doesn’t require a light source (backlight), they produce their own light when the current is applied to organic diodes. The fact that such a screen emits its own light, an OLED screen can display any color of the spectrum.

Viewing angle is a problem for display technologies, a problem that has been solved with the introduction of this technology display. Images displayed on this screen has the same color regardless of what angle they are viewed.

There is the premise that next year will be released mobile devices with flexible OLED. I’m looking forward to launching the first flexible OLED display device.

media facades.

I am fascinated by interactive large displays in public places, "urban screens" and the convergence of architecture and technology, especially media facades, and am happy to share a video of a presentation of Thomas Schielke to a group at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Thomas Schielke is a German architect known for his work in the area of architectural lighting and media facades. In the presentation, Thomas talks about how new technologies are influencing what he calls "urban branding", and also provides an overview of related history. If this is an area that interests you, take the time to view the video! = 60 minutes.
