Laser Phosphor Display - LPD - How It Works

Behind the lasers and mirrors, Prysm is turning from a scrappy start-up to a major player. The company is announcing today an additional $100 million in equity funding, bringing their total raised financing to $135M. This latest round of funding comes Partech International and Artiman Ventures along with several global unnamed investors that wish to remain anonymous due to the innovative nature of Prysm’s technology.

The large round allows Prysm to start volume production of its displays as well as build a 150 member global support team. Amit Jain, founder and CEO of Prysm indicated in a released statement today that the funds will be used in part to train personal and support Prysm operations in 11 major worldwide markets.

Prysm, formally Spudnik, started demoing its novel large venue displays in 2010. The technology utilizes laser diodes and a surface-emissive phosphor panel in an affair much like that of a laser printer. Once directed by a mirror, the laser turns the phosphorus red, blue or green thus producing a flicker-free image that’s also void of motion blur. Prysm has built the LPD technology into panels that can be combined to produce a massive display. Best yet, it’s energy-efficient and an 80-inch screen only uses 100 watts; a 225-inch display (yep, they get that big) uses less energy than a hair dryer. Prysm states that amount is less than a third of today’s conventional displays.

Breaking into the display business is tough. Consumers and corporations alike tend to opt for traditional and proven technology rather than betting on upstarts. Despite the big claims of its groundbreaking technology, Prysm will be paddling against the display adoption current for a while. At least now they have the wind of an additional $100 to their back.

Flex komt er aan !

Samsung, Nokia and HP already showed the first samples of flexible displays, the images just as sharp as conventional screens.

After making public the technology used for flexible displays at CES 2011, Samsung go forward and announces launch of new products with flexible display starting with 2012.
I wonder why Samsung made ??this decision suddenly, to produce mobile devices with flexible display. The answer came sooner than I expected. After some market research has been established as 2015 market devices with flexible display is expected to reach 2.4 billion dollars.

Dragon Projection Mapping.

Het Rotterdamse uitgaanspubliek stond zaterdag 15 oktober 2011 oog in oog met een reusachtige draak, die tot leven kwam op het Witte Huis aan de Gelderse kade in Rotterdam. Een stunt van Bacardi, die hiermee aandacht vroeg voor de introductie van het nieuwe drankje Bacardi Dragonberry.

This year marks 30 years of the partnership between Hugo Boss and the McLaren F1 team. Celebrating the opening of the new Hugo Boss Milan store, the two companies commissioned a unique piece of projection mapping in the Piazza San Babila. The content was created by Angelsign Studio, for creative director and 3D visual designer Roberto Fazio. Four Christie 20k Lumen devices are providing the horsepower, with the audio design being created by Be Invisible Now!

We see a fair amount of projection mapping here at InAVate, and it would be easy to get jaded by it, but this one is a particularly fine example. The projection is incredibly sharp, and the content has been designed in such a way as to really push the illusion of 3 dimensions popping out of the building façade.

Tesco gebruikt Augmented Reality.

Tesco is in the midst of a huge “Big Price Drop” campaign and one of the new elements they’ve rolled out is the use of Blippar’s Image Recgonition / Augmented Reality technology to bring their ads to life via iPhones, iPads and all sorts of Android devices.

The Augmented Reality print ads launch an animated version of the ad, and provide an extra level of interactivity helping you to find the closest store, view recipe ideas related to the products in each ad and other store information.


Interesting idea although I wonder how many people will actually do it?
Is the investment of time worth it for content you can find on the internet (download Blippar, scan your reader over news paper which you were reading)?

The Gadget Show builds an FPS simulator.

Racing simulators are ten a penny, but the closest an FPS player will get to an immersive experience is buying some branded peripherals. Armed with a pre-release level of Battlefield 3, The Gadget Show enlisted a team of design experts to transform a Birmingham studio into an FPS simulator costing £500,000 ($650,000). A four by nine meter video dome surrounds the player as they stand on an omni-directional treadmill that lets you walk wherever you want to go. Ten infra-red motion tracking cameras and a sensor on your gun enables the picture to follow where you point it and a Kinect hack controls your jumping and crouching. The fun doesn't stop there -- 12 paintball markers mean that every time you get shot in the game, you'll feel it. The show airs in the UK on October 24th at 8:00pm, Channel 5.
