AMOLED market grows 160% in Q1.


There are two types of OLED displays – passive organic LED displays (OLED) and active matrix OLED displays (AMOLED).
AMOLED displays provide a very high contrast and brightness together with a wide, almost 360deg, viewing angle. These properties result in thin, light weight and very compact displays.

The AMOLED market has grown rapidly in the first quarter of 2012.
The first quarter of 2012 saw a rapid growth in the AMOLED display market, as more and more manufacturer's look to take advantage of the technology.

It saw a growth of 160 per cent in the first three months of 2012 when compared with the figures from 2011.

According to DisplaySearch, the global AMOLED market was worth $1,488 billion in the first quarter of the year, up from $573.79 million a year earlier.

AMOLED displays are proving popular with manufacturers as they are brighter and clearer that conventional LCD displays, which have been used for a number of years.

The proliferation of smartphones is a major contributory factor in the rapid growth of the market, with high-performance smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Note using the technology.

Samsung Mobile Display began mass-producing AMOLED displays for the first time in 2007. The firm currently dominates the market with a 97 per cent share.
