Sony Corporation has created a tabletop, interactive display using a projector, depth sensors and motion tracking. The prototype was unveiled at the SXSW Interactive Festival, March 11 to 15, 2016 in Austin, Texas and was demonstrated under Sony’s Future Lab Program that was launched at the beginning of the month.

A demonstration to technology, science, art, and culture publication The Verge showed the digital content interacting with a hard copy of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Characters are shown to walk off the page and on to the table and can be moved and manipulated by responsive touch control.

The Future Lab Program behind the demonstration was set up to encourage a creative approach to technology research and development.

Sony says that part of the approach is to share concept prototypes with users while still at the development stage. The company will then use the feedback for further inspiration, refinement and evolution of the products.

The projected tabletop display was the second project from the Future Lab Program, with the first also showcased at the SXSW Interactive Festival. The first project, known as "N," is a concept prototype featuring a hands-free user interface that creates a new way of experiencing audio such as music and sound, allowing the user to receive audio information without having to insert any object into their ear.
