Tablets - de grote hit op de CES.

Deze week wordt tijdens de Consumer Electric Show (CES) in Las Vegas de aanval ingezet op het succes van Apple’s iPad. Een groot aantal leveranciers zoals Motorola, Dell en Acer zal tablets introduceren. Ook Microsoft zal volgens de geruchten een nieuwe tablet tonen die op Windows 7 draait.
Analisten verwachten dat er komende week meer dan zeventig nieuwe tablets worden getoond.

Volgens schattingen van onderzoeksbureau iSupply zal de markt voor tablets dit jaar verdrievoudigen van 18 miljoen stuks naar 61 miljoen. Uitgaand van een gemiddelde verkoopprijs van 500 euro per stuk komt dit neer op een marktgrootte van meer dan 30 miljard. Voor 2013 verwacht iSupply zelfs dat er meer tablets verkocht gaan worden dan desktop PCs.

Dit maakt de markt zeer interessant voor leveranciers die proberen een stuk van de markt te veroveren. Ook al lijken leveranciers niet in staat Apple in te halen, een positie als nummer 2 op de markt is ook heel aantrekkelijk.

SDI Digital Print vs Digital Signage.

If there was one single piece of creative at any show anywhere in the world in 2010 which we think summed up what the digital signage industry needs to be doing at their own events and (more importantly) at (related) graphics, sign, mobile, consumer electronic events the world over it was this clever juxtaposition of digital print and digital signage on the SDI Gesellschaft für Medientechnologie mbH stand at #viscomffm Frankfurt.
You can see on the left hand side (of the picture here on the right) a traditional (printed) vertical poster. On the right hand side there are three portrait LG screens demonstrating how animation and the moving image can improve the static image to the left of it – the colour of the car on the right hand side changed from yellow to green and pricing information appeared at the bottom, etc. etc.

An interactive installation using a Hecla-supplied Lighthouse screen is Machina Ludens, which was shown as a piece of art on Dutch interactive narrowcasting channel DROPSTUFF.nl. Using 60m2 of R12 panels, here a camera detects people in front of the screen and starts a game, based upon their movement and eye-positions. For example, the screen shows stars above the viewer’s head, which they can ‘catch’ with their hands and be awarded points for.

Further Lighthouse panels have also been used in conjunction with KITT Engineering technology for Dropstuff, an interactive narrowcasting channel that shows artwork, some of it interactive, on a network screens in museums, railway stations, schools, libraries and art galleries throughout Holland.

Da-Lite Introduces Pico Screen.

WARSAW, IN – Da-Lite Screen Company announces the expansion of its portable line of screens to include a new table top Pico Screen. The new Pico Screen was designed with Pico Projectors in mind and creates the perfect lightweight portable projection system for business meetings, training, gaming and many other applications. Setup is a breeze and is as simple as removing the screen from the carrying case, pulling the two halves of the case apart and placing the screen on a table or stand. There are no latches or feet to deal with. Fully expanded, the viewing area of the screen is a 30” diagonal HDTV format. Since the screen maintains a constant height and is infinitely adjustable, an NTSC Video format can be easily achieved to accommodate a variety of source materials. The Da-Lite Pico Screen is standard with Video Spectra 1.5 gain screen material. In the closed position, the screen case is only 19” long and weighs 5 pounds.

JCDecaux has invested £400k in new digital media elements at London Luton, UK’s fifth largest passenger airport.

Philips komt met PicoPix mini-projectoren.

Philips heeft op YouTube een filmpje gezet waarin ze haar PicoPix pocket mini-projectoren voorstelt. Deze kleine projectoren zijn ongeveer zo groot, of eigenlijk zo klein, als vier op elkaar gestapelde CD-hoesjes. Middels drie Luxeon LED-lampjes moet de lichtopbrengst groot genoeg zijn om foto's en video's op een muur te projecteren. In een onverduisterde kamer zou een beeldformaat met een doorsnee van 2 meter mogelijk moeten zijn. Door de LED-lampjes kunnen de PicoPix Party mini-projectoren tot 2,5 uur op batterijen werken, daarnaast moeten de kleine afmetingen en het gewicht van 140 tot 300 gram de mobiliteit vergroten.

De PicoPix pocket-projectoren kunnen op diverse bronnen worden aangesloten, onder andere computers, spelconsoles, smart phones, digitale fotocamera's en MP4-spelers. De PPX 1230 en PPX 1430 zijn dankzij de meegeleverde verloopkabels te gebruiken met Apple producten zoals de iPhone, iPod of iPad. Hierbij beschikt de PPX 1430 tevens over een ingebouwde mediaspeler en een intern geheugen van 2 GB voor de opslag van films, foto's en ander beeldmateriaal.

Philips zal de PicoPix pocket projectoren vanaf volgende maand op de markt brengen. De adviesprijzen van de PPX 1020, PPX 1230 en PPX 1430 zijn gezet op respectievelijk 199 Euro, 269 Euro en 299 Euro.

De wonderen der techniek zijn de wereld nog lang niet uit, zo blijkt uit de lancering van deze extreem handige applicatie voor de iPhone. Met Word Lens wordt de tekst van alles wat je maar kunt verzinnen -- denk aan borden, menukaarten, et cetera -- in een oogwenk vertaald van de ene naar de andere taal. Zelfs het lettertype van de desbetreffende woorden wordt overgenomen. Vooralsnog werkt de gratis applicatie (addertje onder het gras: een taalpakket kost 5 dollar) alleen van Spaans naar Engels en omgekeerd. Denk je eens in wat de consequenties zijn als dit met alle talen mogelijk is!
