Philips presenteert nieuwe reeks displays.

Bron;www.nu.nl

The cockpit of the future.

Barco's Farnborough International Air Show setup of its cockpit of the future concept, was one of the exhibition's highlights.
The design of the new cockpit display focused on two main pillars: revolutionize the input interface as well as the display concept. The idea that Barco’s avionics R&D team and research partner Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) came up with, was to develop one large unified iPad-style screen with a unified multi-touch display, which allows a more intuitive operation. The concept comprises four bright Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) in a flush design. In this video, you get a full tour of the many advantages this display concept has to offer.

They project more than 10 million pixels on a 61 x 19.8-m ice surface.

With the recent installation of Barco HDX-W14 large-venue projectors, the hockey rink surface in Montreal's Bell Centre can now enhance the Montreal Canadiens' home games by displaying full-motion video content.

Solotech, a Montreal-based audiovisual (AV) integrator, worked with Soundcraft Canada's SC Media Technologies, a Barco equipment distributor, to configure the system with 12 double-stacked high-definition (HD) projectors, each providing 14,000 lumens of visible light. Together, they project more than 10 million pixels onto the Habs' 61 x 19.8-m (200 x 65-ft) ice surface.

"The Bell Centre's projections are the sharpest, most colourful moving images ever seen on a giant sheet of ice," says François Ménard, president of Solotech. "The projectors create higher resolution with no motion blur, despite the ice's highly reflective surface. We've been trying to overcome this challenge for years!"

In addition to creating a video panorama across six edge-blended zones, the automated projectors track players as they enter the rink and combine graphic elements with dynamic lighting.

"The arena is becoming known as the de facto standard in projection on ice," says Jacques Aubé, vice-president (VP) and general manager (GM) of Evenko, which manages all Bell Centre events. "This kind of show is really the latest draw for the National Hockey League (NHL) crowd. Venue managers want to do it and audiences want to experience it."

iDklic Connects iPad to Digital Signage Screen in Mercedes Showrooms.

Brussels digital media agency iDklic has developed a multiscreen concept for Mercedes showrooms in Belgium which is based on a digital signage screen linked to an iPad.
When discussing with a customer, a salesman can control the screen from the tablet and show him all the information relevant to his model (price, photos, videos, performance etc…) in real time.
When the screen is not activated, it displays marketing information in the same way as the other screens already deployed in the German manufacturer’s digital signage network [fr].
The system has been working in 3 showrooms since mid-July, and the plan is to cover a total of 30 sites by the end of the year.

Tesco Opens Interactive Virtual Store at Gatwick

Tesco has opened the UK’s first interactive virtual grocery store in Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal.

Customers are able to view a range of everyday products by scrolling through the moving screens on large virtual fridges. By scanning the barcodes with their smartphones (and via the Tesco app) they can add their chosen products to their online baskets, book a home delivery slot and checkout. Their shopping will then be delivered when they return from holiday.

There are 4 interactive fridges in the virtual store pilot and 6 digital sites positioned around the departure lounge. They use EYE’s digital displays and interactive screen technology from Monster Media.

Around 30,000 people depart from Gatwick’s North Terminal each day and each has an average of 70 minutes of downtime while waiting for flights. The virtual store will be open for business during the two busiest weeks of the year, from 6th August – 19th August. Staff will be on hand to help customers with the scanning and ordering process on their smartphones.

Tesco is the first retailer to offer passengers a service of this kind in the UK. It builds on its launch of the world’s first virtual store in South Korea last year, which allowed commuters to shop in subways and at bus stops by pointing their mobile phones at billboards.

Google Glass

Bron; www.engadget.com
zie ook art 30.05.2012
It was just shy of four months ago that Google first grabbed our attention with Project Glass, launching a mock-up demo video on YouTube to show us what the company had in store. Calendar appointments, text messages, walking directions and even subway alerts popped up as a man went about his day -- the implications were certainly promising, from a convenience perspective. But then, at the end of the demonstration, the wearer hopped in a video call, sharing a live feed of a sunset through the same eyewear that was mounted to his head for the entire day. Project Glass wasn't just about accessing Google services hands-free -- it was about sharing your life with others as it happened, with the people you encountered indoors and out being broadcast around the world in realtime. Privacy? Forget about it. Even in your own home.

Google Glass may now have a name, but we've known to expect something like it. One day. Which also happens to be the title of Mountain View's harmless YouTube intro -- Google Glass: One day... But just a few weeks after our first glimpse at Glass, we learned that day could come in 2013. Google I/O attendees had an opportunity to pre-order a Glass Explorer Edition for $1,500. Beginning next year, several thousand people could be streaming video and photos to their Google+ profiles while walking down city streets, through airport checkpoints, from tables at a restaurant, lecture halls on campus, even business meetings. That's not to suggest that these individuals will be reckless with their newfound live streaming abilities, but the potential exists. And so will the fear.

No shirt. No shoes. Project Glass. No service. Constant monitoring puts anyone on edge, and even if some subjects and strangers are disciplined enough to avoid lashing out, not all will be. Glass attacks will stream live to the web alongside birthday parties, shopping sprees, graduation ceremonies, copyrighted Hollywood flicks at the theater. If your eyes can see it now, Project Glass will see it, too. One day...

soap bubbles, to form a projection screen.

Bron www.engadget.com

If you've ever been to an amusement park, you may have noticed ride designers using some non-traditional platforms as projection screens -- the most common example being a steady stream of artificial fog. Projecting onto transparent substances is a different story, however, which made this latest technique a bit baffling to say the least. Colloidal Display, developed by Yoichi Ochiai, Alexis Oyama and Keisuke Toyoshima, uses bubbles as an incredibly thin projection "screen," regulating the substance's properties, such as reflectance, using ultrasonic sound waves from a nearby speaker. The bubble liquid is made from a mixture of sugar, glycerin, soap, surfactant, water and milk, which the designers say is not easily popped. Still, during their SIGGRAPH demo, a motor dunked the wands in the solution and replaced the bubble every few seconds.

A standard projector directed at the bubble creates an image, which appears to be floating in the air. And, because the bubbles are transparent, they can be stacked to simulate a 3D image. You can also use the same display to project completely different images that fade in and out of view depending on your angle relative to the bubble. There is a tremendous amount of distortion, however, because the screen used is a liquid that remains in a fluid state. Because of the requirement to constantly refresh the bubbles, and the unstable nature of the screen itself, the project, which is merely a proof of concept, wouldn't be implemented without significant modification. Ultimately, the designers hope to create a film that offers similar transparent properties but with a more solid, permanent composition.

ipico is like having a 50” TV in your pocket.

It’s funny how getting the relatives together has changed over the years. A long time ago, gathering the family meant having a meal, talking, maybe some bickering, and watching whatever might be on the television. Now, everyone wants to show off their favorite YouTube videos, or photos from something exciting they’ve done recently. This isn’t a bad thing, but it’s hard to get the entire family to crowd around one mobile device or computer screen to watch something.

We’ve seen several different phone projectors in the past, but they usually end up being somewhat expensive and bulky. The ipico is only a little over half an inch thick, weighs 3.35 ounces, and costs $130. It will only play nicely with the iPhone 4, 4S, 3GS, and the 3rd and 4th generations of the iPod touch though. This projector can toss up a display that is 50”, and uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that plugs in through USB.

Samsung OLED production costs 25% higher than LG.

The costs Samsung are facing to produce OLEDs are 25 per cent more than LG.

The production of OLED displays is costing Samsung 25 per cent more than its rival LG.

According to the latest figures from market research firm NPD DisplaySearch, OLED TV displays are ten times more expensive to manufacture than standard LCD televisions, which will mean they will be significantly more expensive when they reach the market.

However, it also appears likely that buyers looking for an OLED TV will be limited to LG models, with production costs estimated to be at least 20 per cent lower than those of Samsung.

NPD DisplaySearch's AMOLED Process Roadmap Report said that prices of TVs featuring OLED displays could be in the range of £5,000.

Up until now, OLED displays have mainly been used in smaller products such as smartphones, but the technology's potential in the HDTV industry has long been an aim of television brands like LG and Samsung.

NPD has estimated that the OLED display industry is set to grow tenfold in the next four years, with production rising from 2.3 million square metres this year, to over 22 million square metres by 2016

Norwegian art installation.

projectiondesign has supplied nine of its F32 projectors to British artist Isaac Julien for his latest art installation ‘Ten Thousand Waves’. It was on display at the Norwegian Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo.
The AV system for ‘Ten Thousand Waves’ was designed by ArtAV. All nine of the F32s ran at 1080p resolution.
“The unique thing about this system is that we output uncompressed, HD video,” said Nick Joyce, owner, ArtAV.

“We started with 35mm film as a source, then went through a digital intermediate copy that remained completely uncompressed. So the image quality is highly accurate and true to that Isaac has shot and edited.”

YScope - Launch Revolutionary App in the Health and Tech Sectors.

YDreams and Hospital de Santa Maria – Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte (Santa Maria Hospital – North Lisbon’s Hospital Center) present YScope – a gesture-based tool for sterile browsing of medical imaging.
Surgeons are often faced with strict restrictions in the operating room when it comes to manipulating medical imaging because their hands need to be as sterile as possible. Up until now, to access and manipulate exams, doctors had to use a mouse or keyboard, which required they go through the sterilization process once more, or instruct third parties in manipulating the medical imaging for them.

As a pioneer in the area of Natural User Interfaces, YDreams joined forces with Lisbon’s Hospital de Santa Maria’s Department of Neurosurgery to develop a system capable of solving the problem of medical imaging manipulation in the operating room’s aseptic environment.

Digital Signage Display Forecast.

The global market for public displays remains strong, but in recent quarters, flat panel display manufacturers have emphasized revenue and profit over volume, thus lowering the overall unit shipment outlook for this category.
As production of plasma displays continues to wind down, LCD-based commercial displays have yet to fully fill the void, according to the recently released NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly FPD Public Display Shipment and Forecast Report.

With reduced production of plasma, the public display market fell 13 percent year to year; however, LCD public display shipments were up 23 percent year to year, according to the report.

Forecasts still show strong growth, with the market set to push near 12 million units sold in 2018, an increase from just under 3 million units in 2011. Growth will be driven by new applications for public displays such as digital signage, interactive white boards, video walls, electronic menu boards, as well as the global trend toward urbanization in developing countries seen most visibly in China.

Figure 1: Worldwide LCD Commercial Public Display Shipments and Forecast.Source: NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly FPD Public Display Shipment and Forecast Report

The advantage that plasma once had over LCD — larger displays for less money — has been disappearing over the years. Today, vendors such as Sharp are able to produce 60-inch and larger LCDs at less cost. Plasma had been able to capture some of the lower-end demand for public displays with that demand also being fulfilled by lower-priced consumer-TV displays. Leading vendors of commercial public displays, such as Samsung and NEC, are now focusing on 40-inch and larger sizes, conceding that the demand for medium-sized (26- to 39-inch) digital signage can be fulfilled by TV-grade products.

In recent years, LCD manufacturers have been better able to differentiate their larger size displays (40 inches and larger) from similarly-sized consumer TV products with technologies such as thinner bezels, which allow for better video wall installations. Backlight technologies, such as LED, also offer unique solutions, allowing for not only thin displays, but also for higher brightness, which is needed by many commercial applications to perform in various ambient light conditions.

It seems only a matter of time before everything we could possibly imagine has wires running through it. So while this is nothing tremendously new, it’s still pretty cool to look at. We have seen wearable LED gear, but this is pretty slick.

Tabletmarkt; 1 Apple - 2 Samsung - 3 Amazon.

Bron;www.nu.nl

digital signage projection technologies to promote U.S. Olympians.

Just as the world finished watching the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games on July 27, Procter & Gamble and Gillette used digital signage projection technologies to promote U.S. Olympians and Gillette's special Olympics edition of its Fusion ProGlide razor.

Gillette projected video images of Team U.S.A. athletes Tyson Gay and Ryan Lochte onto buildings around Boston and sprays of water over Boston Harbor.

According to Gillette, which posted video of the event on YouTube, "(t)he event was a spectacle of light and water featuring 60-foot holograms of Team USA athletes Tyson Gay launching off the blocks and Ryan Lochte diving into historic Boston Harbor."

As part of Gillette's Global "Get Started" campaign, the company had been gearing Bostonian's up for the night's big event through a series of smaller projections throughout the city on well-known buildings. These brief mini-projections, which featured glimpses of Lochte and Gay, were intended to spark "buzz" in Boston while building anticipation toward the big festivities on Boston Harbor.
The event used multiple projectors to display the video images of Ryan Lochte and Tyson Gay in action on massive screens of particulate water vapor, sprayed into the air above the surface of the Boston Harbor. Water projection is a fine art that blends complex design and projection technology with a natural canvas. As the event began, powerful underwater pumps 100 feet from the water's edge created two video projection canvases by spraying a mist of water into the air. One screen of misted water was 120 feet wide by 55 feet tall, while the other screen of misted water measured 80 feet wide by 30 feet tall. A patented video mapping technology was used to display customized graphics, animations and video footage onto these enormous water screens as the images were projected frompowerful video projection equipment.
