Kinetic Rain: A Dynamic Art Installation.

This signature art installation in the Departure-Check-in hall of Terminal 1 at Singapore Airport might just depict modern beauty, a computer controlled, floating set of copper raindroplets called ‘Kinetic Rain’. Created in two installations beside the entry escalators, each consisting of 608 rain droplets made of lightweight aluminum covered with copper, hanging from steel thread, and controlled by motors that follow a 15-minute sequence of amazing choreography, with the two installations reacting to each other, moving together, mirroring and complementing each of the other raindroplets in a flow you could watch for hours… Amazing.

Fujitsu Develops Invisible QR Codes Made Of Light.

Fujitsu has developed an interactive technology that would bring the viewer the same opportunity for a second-screen experience, without intruding into their first screen experience. The new technology would add lights that are discernible to a phone camera but not to the human eye to a video stream, creating, essentially, a scannable light-based QR codes. Viewers would still have to point their phone towards the TV to receive more information, but there would be no on-screen icon like with the banners or Shazam logos. According to Fujitsu, this technology would enable brands to ‘embed coupons or URLs into TV commercials, and distribute the additional information from television sets directly to viewers’ smart phones.’ Viewers could scan their TVs and receive the coupons from 2-3 meters away. As this technology doesn’t include on-screen prompts, adaption rate would be directly linked to awareness of the product, a potential challenge. The strength of the technology is the potential seamless viewing experience it could provide to consumers. Watch an explanation of the technology below

the largest Autobahn digital signage network in Europe.

Scala Partner SEEN MEDIA now manages the network, consisting of 980 Scala Players. This digital communication solution empowers Tank & Rast to manage their communication and promotion strategy at their 300 restaurants Tank & Rast much more successful and effective. “The management team of Tank & Rast made a crucial decision by incorporating digital communication in their remodeling plan from the start,” states Helge Haarig, Sales Manager DACH at Scala. “The companies that worked together on this project are all specialists in their field, resulting in an optimal Scala powered digital communication network that creates extra sales and advertising revenue and therefore has a great return on investment. The Scala software enables the system operators to distribute, adjust and plan top quality messaging and imagery with the utmost flexibility, creating the perfect platform for Tank & Rast to reach their target audience.” A study of the Association for Consumer Research impressively demonstrated the effectiveness of the advertising messages on the screens of Tank & Rast as the customers were clearly inclined to purchase the displayed product vs. what they had in mind originally. This high association between ads and sales is exactly the desired outcome of marketing. Full case study klik

personal and shared views from single display

A tabletop display that allows users to view shared and personal content simultaneously could have a huge impact on collaboration after a team of scientists showcased a prototype system at the ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology in the USA. The team, led by the University of Bristol in the UK, presented PiVOT (personalised view-overlays for tabletops) with a series of mixed-focus collaborative tasks. Researchers from the University’s Department of Computer Science showed how, through two view zones, PiVOT could provide personalised views to individual users while presenting an unaffected and unobstructed shared view to all users. The system supports multiple personalised views, which can be present at the same spatial location and yet be only visible to the users it belongs to. It also allows the creation of personal views that can be either 2D or auto-stereoscopic 3D images. Sriram Subramanian, Professor of Human-Computer Interaction in the Department of Computer Science’s Interaction and Graphics group, said: "The tabletop system has been created by using an arrangement of liquid crystals. Users can come together and view shared content or by leaning forward can get personalised views that are only visible from that particular viewpoint. "For example, when looking at a city map, if I want to see traffic information I can lean forward and see the traffic-overlay while other people can, at the same time, lean forward and see the elevation information for a particular street. Everyone else who is not leaning forward will continue to see the undistorted city map. Their view will not interfere with mine, even if it is on the same spatial location."

Coke launches dance dance revolution in S. Korea.

The latest salvo in Coca-Cola's battle for global supremacy recently launched in South Korea, not with a bang but with a pop song. The soda behemoth's latest viral video shows an inventive interactive digital out-of-home branding campaign using a kiosk, augmented reality and interactive digital signage. Part of its global integrated "Open happiness'" campaign launched three years ago, the Coke dance machine grabs passersby attention with callouts from members of the South Korean boy band 2PM; shows viewers on-screen with the band members on a multiscreen video wall; and then gets them to dance along with the band, dispensing free Cokes to people who mimic the right moves. According to numerous online sources, the kiosk integrates Microsoft's Xbox Kinect technology to make the machine gesture interactive, and Coca-Cola South Korea posted the video, below, that quickly went viral (almost 1.2 million views and counting) on YouTube about a month ago:

GE’s 58-Foot Video Wall.

A massive new video wall at a GE Digital Energy facility in suburban Toronto / Canada – with GE being a big supplier of the stuff that moves and manages power around Ontario. The origins of GE’s Grid IQ Research & Collaboration Centre’s date back to 2009, with the Ontario government allocating $50M in support for new technologies that make the energy power grid more intelligent, efficient and robust. The new facility in Markham is focused on looking for ways to boost energy conservation and shift more electricity use to off-peak times. Part of the facility is a customer experience center, which has 175 Prysm display tiles as part of a 58-foot wide curved laser phosphor display wall. It would definitely be one of the bigger video walls in the country, and another sign that Prysm is starting to get some traction selling against Christie. This deal undoubtedly irks Christie, as Markham is a couple of hours (or days in traffic) from Christie’s Kitchener home base. The integrator, Advanced Presentation Products, says in a case study the wall is: Driven by multiple unique PC’s, the video signals are processed by a scalable videowall processing system which allows for a cascade of images and a variety of display image scenarios. Utilizing a custom-designed control system, users can interact with the displays in a meaningful way, managing the various scenes and images presented by way of mobile ipads or touchpanels. A digital audio presentation mixer, combined with powerful amplifiers and speakers, provides a truly zoned audio system with absolute user control in various areas of the centre further enhancing the interactive and immersive nature of the solution.

Turn Any 3-D Surface Into A Display

When we imagine displays, we think of computer monitors and smartphone touch screens. They’re basically TVs we stick to things. The idea works well for anything already shaped like a rectangle. But nothing curved quite works--it becomes a tacky retrofit, as seen in minivans and airline seats. Disney Research has come up with an interesting solution called Printed Optics. It’s a threaded display (basically fiber optics) embedded within an object itself--almost like a circulatory system that moves light rather than blood. Its endpoints create a display of absolutely any shape. Whereas Teddy Ruxpin had a cassette player awkwardly shoved into his back, Disney’s tech could make his whole face into a contoured display. The breakthrough here is that Disney is printing these fiber-optic-like tubes right inside any solid form, via 3-D printing. “No one shape is any harder to make than any other. As long as it can be 3-D printed, it can be made,” project researcher Karl Willis tells Co.Design. As of now, the team has successfully printed light pipes as small as 250 microns, the diameter of a few human hairs. Each of these pipes theoretically serves as a pixel, revealing an image that comes from a source display embedded deep within the object. In essence, a somewhat traditional screen still exists somewhere (for example, Disney created chess pieces that glow from a display hidden within the board),but a screen’s rigid construction is no longer limiting the aesthetics of an object.

Android tablet with built-in projector.

Over the past few years I’ve seen a number of folks use tablets to give small group business presentations. Just fire up a slideshow app, prop up your iPad on a table, and everyone can crowd around to look at a tiny PowerPoint presentation. SmartDevices has another solution. The company’s new SmartQ U7 tablet features a built-in 40 lumen projector for presentations, movies, or other content. That way you can project a 50 inch, 854 x 480 pixel image on a wall or screen about 6 feet away. The tablet has a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, and a TI OMAP4 dual core processor. There will be two models, and AndroidYo reports prices will start at $315: •1 GHz OMAP 4430 CPU and 8GB of storage for $315 •1.5 GHz OMAP 4460 CPU and 16GB of storage for $400 While those prices might seem a little high for Chinese tablets, they’re not bad at all when you consider the built-in Pico Projector. A battery powered projector alone could cost $200 or more — and that’s without the attached Android tablet. The 7-inch SmartQ U7 is admittedly not the exact device that would sell me on a projector tablet. Despite having a 1024×600 resolution display, the 40 lumen projector only spits out an 854×480 picture which can be blown up to 50 inches. And though a 1 GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4 Chipset and a Gig of RAM seem a bit pedestrian for a £300-or-less Android tablet—it’s clear that such a device could be improved at a rapid rate and offered at a somewhat affordable price. Obviously, the compromise that would have to be made here would be the slimness of the tablet. But imagine being able to play games on a big screen anywhere you have a blank wall. Or instead of having a TV in your bedroom, you could just project your tablet screen onto a wall and use a wireless speaker. Or yes, maybe you would be using your tablet in the office and want to project a power point presentation or something. (I dunno!) Not only is projector technology better now, but I’d be much more willing to sacrifice some size in a tablet than I would a smartphone. If the quality of the picture was good enough, an integrated projector is definitely something I’d want in a future tablet.

Car Displays are Defining the Driving Experience.

Head Up Displays (HUD) have been added by some companies as a way to keep the driver’s concentration focused on the road rather than have him distracted from it. The attached picture shows the full color HUD used in the BMW 6 series. As can be seen, the amount of information is almost too much in some cases. However, the navigation part is certainly helping to be more focused on the road rather than on the center console, where the navigation system typically located. With the new GPS software it is only a question of time when we will see an augmented reality approach to the navigation functionality. Using real images of a complex intersection for example, may actually be very helpful to a driver unfamiliar with his surroundings. Nevertheless, displays are playing a larger and larger role in the car today then ever before, and I believe this trend will continue going forward. Combined with voice control, we may be adding not only more display real estate to a car, but make the car actually smarter and more user friendly in the process. more information here.

Infrared eye-tracking.

inahbitant SNOW SHOW March 3rd to 4tn Neaba, Japan.

Future Robot reboots digital signage kiosks.

According to Korea IT Times, the FURO interactive robot can provide a variety of services "by reading users' intentions in different situations" by observing users' movement, face and voice, and then conveying the "matched dialogue, facial expression, movement and necessary information." The robots can move around freely on wheels hidden beneath their skirts, and they have anime-style faces on smaller screen "heads" that will show changing facial expressions in response to different stimuli, like smiling to new people or tearing up when someone walks away. The robots were shown at this year's CeBIT show in March, and Future Robot CEO Se-kyong Song told the Times that the show "was very exciting for us to show our technologies and also gain more innovative ideas from them. One buyer from Brazil who ordered over 100 FUROs came up with new business model – mobile (moving) advertisements. As FURO moves around in airports or exhibitions, they said, the back screens which are remotely operated can be utilized for advertisements while the front screen performs ordinary information services."
